could you advise here about a mixer or soundcard in the range up to 1200€ ?
The allen & heath ZED R 16 sounds also very promising, but i wonder if i really would need the return tracks via firewire, its just a little more expensive.
Mackie Onyx 1640i is on the upper range, and has firwire aswell. I had a usb sound interface where i had quiete a lot of troubles, and wonderd if firewire would be less troublesome.
I figure i would need an extra midi clock, to synch my machine without the comptuer, in case the mixer does not supply it.
It eats also a lot of desktop space, so a soundcard maybe the better option, but i would like to have one, which runs without the computer turned on.
What are your solutions ? Would i loose audio quality from the mixer compared to directly going into an audio interface? Would an integrated solution here an optimal solution? How do you set it up for studio /live use.
An RME Fireface UCX is in the same price range, i can read something about standalone operation aswell, does it provide midi clock in standalone? Is midi thru an option for the clock , or is the delay to bad, and i have to connect them directly=?
I would like to record the A4 and the RYTM. (Probably 1 more future synth.)
[color=rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.701961)]I’ve got an fireface UCX and it’s a great sound card with audio routing capabilities that are mind blowing compared to a stand alone mixer. The built in effects (reverb and delay) are quite good although I prefer using plug-ins to get better control and more optionDAW
[color=rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.701961)]In my setup when I’m working stand alone I have the AR as midi clock master and the A4 as slave. Audio routing most of the time setup only to get the master out from both machines into channel 5 to 8 (two stereo pairs).
[color=rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.701961)]Midi clock from the UCX is something you get from using software so there’s no built in clock-thingy when using it in stand alone. You can’t either have midi routing without software with the UCX. But since the AR or the A4 can be used as midi clock masters I don’t see any need for an additional midi clock master device.
[color=rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.701961)]So for midi clock sync between the AR and A4 I use the regular midi ports and when I’m using them with a DAW I send midi clock to the AR. Midi clock out from the UCX on my windows 8 machine and using Cubase is rock solid and has very little jitter. (RME are really good at writing drivers for their hardware.)
[color=rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.701961)]My other hardware right now can get their midi clock from the A4. So my midi clock chain is DAW->AR->A4-TT303 when working in my DAW and AR->A4->TT303 when I’m in stand alone mode.
[color=rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.701961)]I record primarily using my DAW but I’ve also been using the Digicheck software from RME to get more lightweight recording. Been thinking of upgrading to an UFX to get more inputs and outputs what would make recording individual AR tracks easier but I’ll wait and see since it appears what the Overbridge technology will make it possible to do multitracking recording dead easy in a DAW.
after thinking a while about it, i also thought about master /slaving the units, so i dont need an additional clock. What do you think, for a live situation , would a mixer help ? Or is that overkill, and you would anyways use only the main outs, because its so much easier to set up.
