Recording Quality on Digitakt Inputs VS. USB Audio Interface

A bit related to this topic: Yesterday I did some extensive testing comparing a RME ADI-2 Pro FS versus an Elektron Syntakt as an audio interface. (I assume a Syntakt is on par with the Digitakt).

The ADI-2 Pro FS is not strictly an audio interface, but it’s highly praised for its D/A and A/D conversion. I wanted to know if such a “pro device” would really make a difference (for me) sound quality wise compared to one of the Elektron boxes.

Tests:

  • Recording the Syntakt (a few patterns using some analog voices) via direct USB (digital) vs analog output of the Syntakt, recorded at 192khz with the RME. (A/D)
  • Playback of some excellent (losless) mastered tracks via the Syntakt vs the RME (D/A). Syntakt on 48khz, RME on 48/192khz.

I routed both via a (very clean sounding) Mastersounds Radius 2 mixer to do a perfect level match and have instant comparisons.

Listened with a set of Hedd Audio 05 MK2 monitors and a Beyer Dynamic 1990 headphones.

A long story short: Both the RME and Syntakt sounded excellent and I could not detect any real audible differences. In a blind test it would be 50/50. Which means to me that the RME is not adding anything to my setup now, so it will go back and I will happy use one of the Elektrons as my main audio interface.
