Recording Micromonsta with Motu M4?

Is it better to gain within your daw if line is low or use preamps?

My Digitakt for example is way too quiet going into the line in 3/4 inputs at the back of my MotuM4.

Just got a micromonsta, and in ableton if I add 10-12 DB on external instrument insert, it sounds fine.

I have read online but really didn’t get the explanations. I am using a 1/8" TRS stereo to 2 x 1/4" TS cable. Am I missing out by not using the preamps? It’s currently occupied by another synth but I can switch them out once at a time. I have no mixer.

Would appreciate explanation like I’m an alien

Which device is recording quietly? If you’re running the DT L/R outputs into the TRS cable and only using one of the inputs on the M4, you’re getting some phase cancellation, mostly likely. We need some more info to help you. Explain the cable routing a little more. Which DT output(s) are you using? What outputs does a micromonsta have? Which inputs are being used on the M4?

I figured it out, the DT had way less output gain so that’s the one I ended up using with the M4. Even on max it was very quiet in the line in
