Record from TV to Logic

I’ve been wanting to record my TV into Logic via my Focusrite… But last time I did it I had to manually align every track which was a bit off a hassle.

Any good recommendations for how I can record track after track consistently and have them sync up?

Midi out of your Focusrite into Tonverk, with Logic as master and TV as slave.

Whenever you press play in Logic, Tonverk will start playing.

Mute/unmute tracks as desired on Tonverk, recording each new pass to a new track in Logic.

Refer to pages 70 and 71 of the manual.

I’ll check it out in the manual. I can’t do Midi from my Focusrite I believe but I guess I can just do it straight from the computer runnings Logic somehow.

Man, the TV abbreviation tricks me every time, here I was thinking, cool, he wants to sample some old school flow tv :pensive:

I propose TVK or TVRK?

Look, my approach is different and applies to all gear and all daws and you don’t need any MIDI from the computer to the gear:

  1. Obviously, set the daw tempo to the same tempo as your sequencer
  2. Program a kick or a click, anything that’s got a strong transient and have that play only once at the start and never again.
  3. Hit record on your daw
  4. Hit play on your gear
  5. Start muting and changing tracks so you get the isolated parts you want (if recording only to a single stereo track. Make sure to get enough of each part
  6. Go into your daw, align that transient sound from the recording to your grid (turn snap off so you can move the file freely). Turn snap on once aligned. Now everything you recorded is aligned to the grid. You now need to get your razor and start chopping the recording and editing and moving as you wish and everything will be spot on the grid

Well, I can’t program a transient on EACH track of my Tonverk… Otherwise it seems like a good way to go.

Maybe if you explain your process I can better understand your issue. The way I describe involves making a single recording, having one sound play at a time, say, for 4 bars or 8, then switch to the other and so on. It only takes a single trig condition on one track to be a transient to serve as guide for the entire recording of several tracks. Ya feel me?

My plan, or how I’ve done it before is:

I mute all tracks on Tonverk except 1. I hit record in the daw and play on Tonverk and then I record that track for aslong as I like (maybe adding effects as I go or whatever).

Then I continue this process with Track 2, 3, 4… Each only with one Track unmuted at a time.

I later go in and edit the hell out of my recordings – BUT I need them to be in sync. Like they are if I would unmute everything on my Tonverk.

Hopefully that shines some light into my weird recording process :smiley:

then you are doing everything according to the method I described… But you only need to hit record in your DAW once AND you only need to hit PLAY on your TVRK once. Just make sure that transient sound that only plays once is on the first track that you record, you know?

Why? because when you only hit play once, and you got a transient at the start, everything will be in sync within the recording and if you align that transient, the rest will be synced to the grid now. If you record, then pause your sequencer and play again… you will get a huge mess thats going to take forever to align if you even manage to do it. Play once, know everything will be in sync, mute and unmute at ease. :muscle:

What is preventing you from sending midi from your Focusrite? Maybe I’m missing something, but don’t they all have midi out these days?

You make a good point, although with this method there is no need of transients either :smiley:

But I like the idea of recording every track on the TVRK to seperate tracks in my DAW… So that would be my preffered way, if there is one.

I don’t think my Focusrite has any Midi outputs at all…

There is the need for transients (if your song has a kick just record that first?)

Because otherwise the recording will not be aligned with the daw. and you want that. Don’t you?
