Record "back" to the Octatrack

I’m this close to pulling the trigger on an Octatrack. My one last question is if you can record “back” to the Octatrack.

Example, can you record scene slider movements or chromatic trig patterns to another track? Or do those features live outside of the recorder?

Apologies if that doesn’t make sense.

When you’re internally sampling the main the affected sound will be recorded in the audio.

It won’t record the CC parameters onto the track(s), though

Sorry, what do you mean CC parameters won’t be recorded? If I sent a CC command via MIDI, that won’t be captured? Just “live” parameter tweaks (encoder turns or scene slider movement) is recorded?

The automation won’t be recorded from the fader onto the tracks is what I meant

Got it. So that’s only a performance feature, not a recording feature it sounds like. That’s too bad!

whatever you’re doing to the audio with the crossfader will be captured in the new sample

You can control the crossfader with a CC, record CC knob or plock values, add midi lfo and play it after. Several midi tracks can control it, scenes, samples with arp…and you can mute / unmute them.

I have a hunch you’d want to know about the limitations of the OT as a live midi recorder - the limits of its resolution, being a step recorder. It has been discussed and described on here so have a search around.

There are various features, (arps, lfos, conditional trigs, step-smoothing) plus workarounds and extra programming that can bring great complexity and automation to even a simple 16 step pattern, but considering all its other powers you may be surprised at the limits for capturing live midi. Worth checking

You can audio resample basically anything…

But I think you’re referring to sequencing. In which case:

Crossfader movements: No. But there are workarounds ie programming MIDI feedback from an internal MIDI track or maybe the arranger

Chromatic: Yes. You can copy an audio sequence to another audio track or MIDI to another MIDI track (but not audio to MIDI or vice versa unfortunately…I guess though you could get around it with MIDI feedback now that Im writing this…hmmm…TO THE OT!)

Interesting. I know I’m in over my head, but just picked up an OT mkII. I am ultra new to synths/sequencing/MIDI. The only MIDI familiarity I have is PC and CC messages on guitar pedals. I have my MIDI guitar pedals hooked up to a MIDI controller. But I feel like MIDI tracks are something different…?

MIDI tracks sequence MIDI control.

Manual is your friend.
