I’m looking for a simple no-frills MIDI keyboard up to 250€ to control my gear that has aftertouch and semi-weighted keys. Most of the keyboards I’m finding with these features include a ton of additional buttons/faders for controlling DAWs that I don’t need and are way too expensive.
The ones that seem to be closer to what I’m looking for are the M-Audio Oxygen Pro 49 (still has a lot of extra faders but at least it’s cheap) and the Nektar Impact GXP49. Anyone here has experience with these two models? How are the keys in terms of feeling?
I use an Akai MPK249 (lots of extra controls on it tho). Not stellar keys feel, but does what I need and is very configurable in terms of velocity and after touch response to adjust to taste.
You should also consider the Native Instruments Komplete Kontrol A49 in this budget range.
I think the feel of a key bed is a very personal thing so if at all possible I’d recommend trying the shortlist options out at a shop if you can.
Edit: just noticed you wanted semi-weighted keys! Neither of my suggestions are that.
There’s the M-Audio Axiom range that might suit? I used to have an Oxygen 49 and I liked the general build quality and pots etc for the price.
I looked and looked and in the end got a second hand Analog Keys for £480. Nice keybed with proper keys, after touch and velocity, and an external button to toggle the link between the keyboard and the synth engine.
The Oxygen 49 Pro seems to be the closest to what I’m looking for… how did you like the key feel on yours?
You’re right, I just edited the original post to include that. I’m looking to spent up to 250€. The semi-weighted are more of a preference than a mandatory thing.
That’s a bit more than what I want to spend, but I’ve thought of doing something similar with the Behringer Deepmind 6, which is cheaper and also has aftertouch.
I actually checked and it was a Radium 49 (very old!). So it didn’t have semi weighted keys. Anyway - the feel was as you’d expect in a budget unit - serviceable but nothing special.
I’ve not tried the Oxygen Pro range but I’ve heard generally positive things about them - same for the Nektar ones.
Yeah the keys, pads, faders and knobs feel great on the MPK249 especially for the price - it’s not small but if you can fit it, it’s nice to use - doesn’t feel cramped. Pitch and mod wheels are above the keyboard rather than to the left which saves a bit of width!
