I have a Moog Minitaur which I am very happy with. It is monophonic though and have a limited sound palette but the sounds that do come out are off the charts. Fills the mix really nice. Also it can be used as an external effect box.

You also have the dsi tetra which I think is a bit more versatile with regards to its price.

Alesis Micron if you want a nice cheap second-hand VA poly, Bass Station II if you want something analogue. Both have simple sequencer and arpeggiator features built-in, so there’s no need for the iPad.

It seems to me that the scene and permance modes can take care of this.

not really had chance to play around with that yet, I was on about from 3:18 on the video, just to basically input all patterns without needing to use micro timing on some steps leaving more time to play around with the tweaking the sound on the rytm. Unless the performance mode would take care of that?

Maybe a Waldorf Pulse 2.
It has monophonic and 8 voice paraphonic mode. It seems very versatile to me.

Novation Ultra Nova… It’s an incredibly powerful under rated synth. Like a one part Access Virus TI with capacitive knobs for performance macros. Buy used.

The MI stuff is absolutely lovely. You should go for that if you’re somewhat handy with a soldering iron.

Sometimes they appear on eBay assembled,however there is a few filter boards to choose from. I’ll Just have to wait if the right one is for sale on eBay, they sound nice though

I’d recommend heading over to the MI forum and have one built for you by a trusted builder. This will not be much more expensive (if at all) and guarantees you get a good unit.

Buying from eBay can also work well (I sold a few instruments I assembled through eBay myself), but there are also people selling dodgy stuff there (unofficial PCBs, incorrect components used, etc), so keep an eye out for that.

the budget seems to be the constraint…I’m assuming you are wanting something analog since you mentioned an iPad…the iPad has some wonderful soft synths…some of the synths mentioned in this thread are not analog though so not sure if that was a requirement or not

someone already mentioned the minitaur…fantastic analog synth but it shines in what it was designed for (bass registers)…not sure I would pick it for an overall synth (though I would never give mine up heheh)

maybe have a listen to the volca bass/keys for something really cheap…you don’t have a lot of flexibility on them though…believe it or not, I still sequence mine into the mix now and then…even with A4, minitaur, etc…

better yet, maybe save up a while

once you get into the 1000-1500 range (usd) things really start to open up (I’m gas’ing for the sub37 myself)

For the amount you are talking about you could get a used A4 i would think… maybe a bit more… but that is a great marriage! A used OP-1 would be good. I am on a trip with that set-up now. the TB-8 might be a fun set-up a-la cheap.

Another route is an iPad…

Also check out the Mutable Instruments forum, there are usually a few preassembled units for sale. I bought my Ambika from there.

Hi,

I don’t have the AR yet and didn’t have many synth neither but I own an Evolver Desktop (Dave Smith Instrument).
It a monophonic, 4 Oscillators, many modulations, 4 sequencers, 4 lfos and a very raw sound.

It depends a lot on the kind of music you are doing: I usually do rythmic + bassline (fat distorted that takes lot of frequency space), thus I don’t a have the need of polyphonic synth and if I do I would use a FM8 or Massive plugins.

I usually record audio in my daw (ableton live) of Evolver sessions (20/30 minutes). Then I would cut the parts that stands out and play them as clips in Ableton.

I’m really looking forward playing those Evolver samples from the AR directly.

I’ll still use ableton to record and trim, but once it is done and transfered to AR, my eyes, my brain and my heart will be focusing on AR and Evolver (connected to AR’s Audio In).

If you want a contrasting sound to the Rytm, maybe something digital with an architecture not primarily geared towards subtractive analogue emulation…?

Perhaps an FM machine? DX7s are still pretty cheap. Most digital synths will do some kind of FM though.

I do love my Korg Z1, but the Radias is supposedly very nice and should also have architectural flexibility too.

Nord Modular G1 or G2 are fantastic though if you want a very flexibile architecture. It’s a huge shame that they stopped making them.

if you already have your eyes on an A4 for the near future i’d look at a second hand minitaur and use the money you save to populate your iPad with some synths and other music related apps. not necessarily in this order:

Animoog
Nave
Thor
Cubesynth
Addictive
Sunrizer
Korg ipolysix

some people find it fiddly but i have got great results sequencing the minitaur and other stuff from theysys…and then of course when you get your a4 you will retain a track that you would have lost to bass duties and you can have at it on the moog with the cv output…
