Quit one of my jobs today because of racism in the workplace

hey
so i quit a job today that i had been in for a few years because of a second occurrence of racism from staff - contrast with my other job where there has been one occurrence of racism in six years where i still work - just wondering if anybody has been through this too?

Haven’t been through it personally, but worked in a very openly racist and sexist office environment for years and witnessed things firsthand. I’m so sorry you experienced this. I truly hope you find something better elsewhere.

Yup. I actually got laid off from two different jobs due to disagreeing with owners on their racist rhetoric. Good on you for standing with your values. I hope this doesn’t put you through any financial troubles.

Huge plus one!

Can’t say I’ve personally witnessed any shall we say to the point racism or sexism in my career, but I’m fairly confident the systemic racism/sexism has been present. Crazy hard to get rid of

thanks for your good wishes
fortunately i can make it work
its just upsetting to feel hated because of something so random as your race - its such a lottery if you are born in a mud hut in the middle of a forest or a penthouse in a big city we all just the same in the end so why the hatred?

If anyone else is in this situation, remember most states look down heavily on workplace abuse so there are often better outcomes than just quitting: paid leave, fines for the company if they enabled/ignored it, out of court settlement if you have evidence, etc. In OP’s case I’m sure they made the best choice they could in their circumstance, sometimes you just need to get out.

My work is full of stupid ignorant dickheads with questionable opinions. Not so much racism but ignorant opinions that lean into racism, sexism, homophobia etc

I’m really sorry you had to go through that :frowning:

It’s not just your workplace unfortunately.

Trump just revoked federal anti-discrimination rules in place since 1965 banning discrimination by federal contractors:

The US is fucked…we’re all just frogs slowly boiling in the water now…

I’m guessing this web page is soon to be “disappeared” or radically changed by the Trump administration but if you want to know the details of the LBJ executive order he revoked, the Dept of Labor website discusses it’s history here:

Sadly his actions have a global impact. Morons now will see their hatred and bigotry justified by his actions. Americas global influence is frightening

humanity laughs in the face of politics then rips its face off then wears its face as a face over its face then eats its own face - we are an odd species for sure

Sorry if I’m being ungenerous in my reading of your post (re: @homealone), but:

  • Does this relate to racism in the workplace, or is this just a subtle attempt at whataboutism?

No it was just a response to your comment criticising your government, so I posted an example of racism by the UK government. Fair?

Oh the whistling is loud on this one!

I’m absolutely sure there’s lots of racist policies in the UK and other governments. Did they just write this racist policy into law or revoke a standing policy forbidding the racism you’re describing? Does it have anything to do with workplace discrimination (the topic of this thread)?

Are you referring to my comment?
