I spent some time archiving my old DT and OT projects and then formatted and reloaded my boxes with the factory presets / sounds.
This time, I held off from dumping all of my sample packs from my computer onto my boxes and just jammed with whatever Elektron gives us, and it was really fun not having to think about sample management, renaming things with BPM and Key, and all the other DAW/ITB-related tasks. I realize I was at times put off from using my DT because I was thinking of it as containing a more limited base of samples from my computer, and that way of comparing it with my ITB workflow often killed the inspiration.
I think going forward I’m going to approach my OTB gear more separately from my Ableton setup. They’re meant for different things and there’s a time and place for both, but personally I’ve found new joy in using both by avoiding making comparisons between the two in my head.
Agreed. Stock sounds and presets are underrated I use the stock Digitakt drum sounds all the time, they’re a great jumping off point and constraining myself to them has shown me the sound design possibilities on the DT.
Same for the OT. I just downloaded the free Elektron RTYM drum sound pack so I had some drum samples in there, but most of the time just wing it.
About DT, stock sounds and official elektron sample pack sound very good because the sample are formated to Mono 16bits / 48 KHz.
When you load common sample made for DAW, the samples are Stereo, and when transferred on the DT, I don’t know exactly if the L+R channel are summed or if it take only the Left channel, but in both case it’s not the best way to convert mono to stereo.
Each sample should be carefully listenned to choose the best channel and record it into the DT with the right setting.
