I haven’t been flying in ages and want to bring my Digitakt + a bigger power bank and a ripchord with me on vacation. I’m afraid they might lose it if I don’t take it on board with me. Will it be an issue if I put a DT into my hand luggage? Flying with Eurowings from Germany to Italy.
The spouse brought a Syntakt once. It was totally fine. Depending on seemingly random factors you may need to remove it from your bag through security. Note that batteries/powerbanks cannot be placed in checked luggage so you would have to carry that on anyway. Enjoy your trip!
I work in the video games industry and have flown much bigger electronics along with tons of cables and the worst that happened was you get a special search at security. And that was non-Schengen (Poland to US). As long as the device does not contain any batteries, you should be good to go. I’m saying should because you never know ;).
As for musical instruments, two months ago I flew with a Roland MC101 and 3 Roland Aira Compacts and the lady at security asked what those are. I said music instruments, she nodded and that was that. That was outside of Europe as well.
All in all, I’ve seen a few airports in my life and it’s less the regulations and more the particular security person that might be the problem, but I would fly with any Digi without much fear.
Hope this helps.
On the other side of this question, I knew a guy who checked his digitakt 1 in his luggage as opposed to taking it carry on, and when he got it back the screen bezel was broken, like it got hit with a gunshot. I think that the airline paid to replace it in it’s entirety with a whole new unit, but still, it’s like the exact 1 in 10 situation that you would fear.
Oh, by the way. You mentioned powerbanks. AFAIK, 20000 mAh is the limit for air travel, but please doublecheck that. If you have a monster brick, that actually might be a problem.
They will give you a choice of throw it away, or go home. You definitely want to check this like he says.
I’ve checked, they say Lithium batteries below 100 Wh or 2g LC are fine. My powerbank is 96,48 Wh and 26800 mAH, says nothing about LC. So can I check this or not?
Same experience for me with OT and DN, never had an issue but randomly have to remove it from the bag during security. Sometimes the same airport will make me remove it from the bag or just pass me through on different days, no idea why.
I managed to obtain a picture of the airline damaged digitakt, so regardless of what you choose to do, also read about whether the airline will reimburse damage to checked luggage or if you need receipts or whatever because that 1 in 10, or 1 in 100 chance is enough to make me cautious even if the other nine or 99 had good experiences checking them into the cargo hold.
Screen protector still on it too, not that it protects anything.
I’ve never had issues bringing these devices with me.
I’ve brought a Model device from the US to Denmark and Germany with no issue.
“Bigger power bank” as mentioned should be checked based on size/wattage and flight restrictions.
I’ve also never been bugged internationally about all my bloops n wires, no matter how janky my bag looks
Slow: Digitakt on a gondola.
If you’re flying from Berlin, the security person probably has their own Digitakt setup at home!
I flew internationally with a DT, AH, Norand Mono, and 64hp modular in my rollaboard, and an A4mk1 in my backpack. I just had to take everything out at security. One of the agents asked me, “Are you a DJ?”. That was pretty much the worst thing that happened.
The powerbank should be fine to check or to carry on, but don’t use it on board, they really don’t like that. Understandably, they really need to err on the side of caution, and I curse the eager manufacturers who put shoddy battery hookups into circulation and ruined it for the rest of us.
Hey there, I’ve actually done this before, and it worked like a charm! In fact, I even took my trusty Digitakt on a long haul from Denver to Munich. Let me tell ya, it was smooth sailing the whole way. Kept me entertained for hours—total blast! You gotta give it a whirl, my friend!
Great, thanks you all, great community as always! Still not sure about whether to take the PSU with checked luggage instead of a powerbank onto the plane.
Anything to worry about with regular headphones, no battery?
Take them off for the safety ritual, it’s just politeness, even though you can probably recite the whole thing
I take my Digitakt everywhere. A decksaver and a shoelace come in very handy.
I won’t wear them on the plane, was just worrying about security hassle!
I know. They don’t care about headphones for security. Even with batteries, they’re not big enough to matter. Also security, as far as I know, does not involve themselves with batteries. Gate agents care about that, but they have much less ability to check and enforce.
Never heard about “LC”, so can’t help here. But if it’s within Wh limit then it should be OK. The worst that can happen is that they will tell you to throw it away. Since a decent powerbank is what 70 euro? Not an end of the world. And I don’t believe that’s gonna happen.
