Questions about syncing Elektron gear

Hi all,
New forum member and AR owner, sorry for the newb question. I’m looking to add an A4 to my setup and have some questions about syncing and routing the two. Mainly I’m looking to be able to work in song mode with both machines in sync and switching patterns collectively, etc. The idea being to be able to compose (mostly) full tracks away from a computer and then record them into Logic later.

I’m pretty sure this is doable (from looking at performances from Dataline and Lem…) but I haven’t had much luck searching for details about how to set this up in a practical sense.
If anyone can point me to some threads or links that would be very much appreciated!

Cheers!

I’m at work and the browser here is atrocious but yes, you can do what you want to do. Well, it is between an OT and A4, don’t see why it wouldnt be for A4 and AR. Someone will chime in with the links I’m sure but it’s basically just a case of setting your units up to send/receive pattern changes and things. Works pretty well for me and has made OTB song writing easier/smoother. Enough so that I’m thinking of adding a 3rd Elektron box…

Thanks for the info! I’ve been digging around more and yes it does seem quite possible. The main thing I’m still trying to figure out, is if the A4 (or Rytm) will send pattern changes as program change messages automatically from song/chain mode. Ie. I build a song structure on whichever device I’m using as the master, and during playback of the song it should automatically change the corresponding pattern on the other when it changes.

Of course this raised a few other questions, assuming it’s possible–

  • what happens if the corresponding patterns on either machine are different lengths, etc?

  • if you were playing A01 pattern on the AR, would it necessarily play A01 on the A4, or can you have it play a different pattern?

  • is there a way to set a pattern change trig on one device that only affects the other device ?

Bear in mind I’m kind of a midi/hardware noob here so apologies if this is like 101 kinda stuff. I’ve read both manuals and they’re a bit skimpy on info for this sort of thing.

Cheers,
-Darren
