I have the chance to buy a used octatrack mk2 for cheap from a music shop. They’re offering 2 years warranty and can provide an invoice. I’m wondering: is this invoice valid for direct assistance from elektron? Will I be able to get free fixes if needed?
The shop you buy it from should facilitate any warranty repairs through Elektron during the 2 year warranty period.
Any Elektron product has a service warranty for 3 years from the date of build listed on the sticker underneath the machine. If the OT was built within the last 3 years then the remainder of the factory service warranty is available to the new owner even without any invoice.
If the OT is outside of that service period, or it is not fully covered under the 2 years they promised, then the warranty would be through the shop itself, not elektron, however elektron’s service and repair department will accept repair work outside of the warranty period on a cost-for-service basis.
That means that if the machine does not have an elektron warranty, but the shop is giving you 2 years warranty, the only way that elektron’s repair shop would do the work is if it were contracted paid work. I would therefore first clarify with the shop if they are offering you what is already included with any elektron equipment purchase (the 3 years from build date on the bottom sticker) or if they are offering you 2 years of coverage by their shop (and if so, who will do the repair work when necessary)?
Probably important to find out and that way you can understand your options better because I don’t know the price you’ve been offered but while cheap is appealing, sometimes a little extra cost to receive an active elektron warranty may be worth it for you to explore. If the warranty is already what’s provided by elektron, you have nothing to lose unless they are trying to charge you extra for something you would already receive from any similar purchase.
I hope that makes sense, and if they tell you the “mfgtd:” code from the bottom, it will have the year as well as the week number (indicated by W followed by a number) in which it was produced so that you can see for yourself if the information that they’re giving you about warranty is accurate.
Thiis was very clear! Thanks a lot
