There are a few interfaces that are class compliment. That should be sufficient. I believe class compliment even applies to midi. That and a photo kit(it’s an iOS USB adapter(get the one with both a usb and lightning cable port for devices that need a bit more juice))
That and a good daw app should be sufficient for your recording needs
If you get an iPad with a Lightning port, you will need this:
If you get an iPad with a USB-C port then you don’t need the above.
Other items you need:
USB MIDi interface
USB audio interface
Some products will give you #1 and #2 in one unit.
There are tons of choices because some people can get by with 1 audio jack and others need 24 or them or whatever. Same thing with the MIDI interfaces.
In the other thread you said you have a mixer so maybe you can just get a 2-input audio interface. Unless you want to record more than 2 tracks of audio at the same time.
Regarding the adapter, it depends on which iPad you get. If you get one with USB-C, you won’t need the adapter. If you get one with Lightning, then yes the adapter will let you plug in your iPad power cable and a USB audio interface.
Here is a page showing what interfaces will work with iPad. Don’t panic if yours does not appear there. After you get your iPad, you will find out very quickly if the one you have works or not…
Compatible with Windows XP, Vista, 7-10, as well as Mac OS
Possible that you will need a powered hub.
Other things to consider are if you want portability, how many channels in (or out) you want etc.
One thing worth noting is that you can connect the iPad to Digitakt midi in via USB (using the camera kit mentioned earlier). This will allow you to control iPad synths, etc. You can the plug the headphone out directly to the in of the digitakt for sampling, monitoring, etc, from the headphone jack.
I have a usb-power hub… I know the behringer works when I bring it the bands sets and hook it up my friends pc to record… If I connect the interface to the hub, then the ipad to the hub would that work? if so I wouldn’t need a cck right? just lightning to usb? or do I still need the cck?
Also when it comes to ipad shopping what should I look for? I’m terrible with tablets and phones… I don’t want the top of the line, I just want one that is able to perform daw and synth apps…
The issue with USB devices and the iPad seems to be the power draw. Some on my USB controllers are fine connected directly, but others require a hub.
One if the things about the USB connection kit is that it also has a power spot so you can charge your iPad while you use it. Sadly this doesn’t power the USB device connected.
My recommendation would be the newest iPad mini (v5) if you want portability, or the newest iPad Air if you want a bigger screen. These bot have headphone jacks, can use an apple pencil (gen 1) and have pretty good power.
I personally use an iPad mini as I only really use it midi and audio generation. I dont use a DAW on the iPad.
I use a 12 channel USB mixer with a camera connection kit, and a Bluetooth midi adapter for midi. It works really well.
Biggest problem I find with the iPad is the HUGE variety of apps. Seems I spend almost as much time learning new apps as I do actually making music.
I’m fiddling with that right now, one question… I like to record all my stuff clean no reverb or effects how do I do that? I’ve figured out how to splice too but can you make it more percise instead of doing bars… more like mm sec?
I got it my last question right now about IPADS… I got the ipad air can anyone recomend a decent case, that i can use, and have it stay up like a monitor?
