Push 3 Users Thread

Agreed, but it’s a workaround for the time being. I added it to the Elektron tracks in my template project, where they were nicely tucked away. (Have a Blokas Midihub now, which does the same)

Thanks for sharing your settings. I’ve been using Threshold 0 as well. I hadn’t adjusted Range, but had pushed the drive higher. Have you changed Drive and Compound from their defaults?

Latest beta release notes (30b1) sounds promising.
more fixes
Improved MIDI Sync
Something that I interpret as audio-sync IN

And something that I am very excited about: it is the first beta, where they enabled Node.js in M4L Devices, so finally we might be able to use all those awesome and feature rich devices (as soon as their developers make them p3 ready).

I noticed this addition but have no idea what it means. Can you explain the significance?

Node.js is a development-environment based on JavaScript. In M4L it is used to add features that the original M4L framework does not provide. Most of the devices that feel more like full fletched plugins are using it and because of that currently don’t work on p3 Standalone. I am quite sure that it will take some time until everything will work, but this opens the path for more advanced devices.
On top of that, it shows that Ableton is doing what people are hoping: not fust fixing bugs but really improving and enhancing the capacity of the standalone push.

Did you also get a push hw update in standalone mode? Or is the push update done via the Live update?
(Like many of us, I accidentally went back to the public push hw stream in the latest update)

In my case, despite having been on the beta, I needed to download and install this latest one manually. I was prompted to update to the stable release a couple of weeks ago and accepted - I didn’t realise that would opt me out of beta auto-updates, but it seems like it did.

Nope! Only range. No complaints thus far with these settings.

Just a heads up, on the latest beta, with no specificity, I’m getting lots of hard crashes including on previously created sets on standalone.

I don’t know the culprit yet, but I am mostly using official live packs in my sets.

Currently I am on the public firmware because i have way too little time to do testing and mess with issues currently, so I have to wait a few more weeks for all that to happen
But then it will be the same software update on the push as always.

Here is the latest beta list for PUSH if anyone is interested. 11.3.20b1

Push 3 - New features and improvements:

  • Push’s pads and some of the buttons can now be used when browsing the Push 3 Tips lesson on the hardware.
  • When Note Pitch Bend is set to Automatic in Push’s Expression settings, the glissando type will be pitch bend when using the External Instrument device with the Channel set to MPE.
  • Two new buttons, ÷2 and ×2, have been added to Clip View for halving and doubling an audio clip’s tempo.
  • External Sync can now be enabled in the MIDI tab of the Setup menu, this makes it possible to set up external MIDI clock sync directly from Push.
  • The half-tempo button for audio clips and the Simpler device is now labelled as ÷2.
  • A Crop command has been added to Clip View for audio clips.
  • The layout for the Resonators device has been improved on Push 2 and 3.
  • In the Audio tab of the Setup menu, there are now two entries for Clock Source: Internal and ADAT In. When set to ADAT In, Push will be synced to the external clock, and Live’s audio engine will follow the external clock rate.
  • When hot-swapping audio clips, the browser will open to the location of the selected clip. When hot-swapping empty clips, the browser will open to its main list of categories.
  • The current firmware version is now displayed in the Software settings even when Push is in Control Mode.
  • A more meaningful firmware version is now displayed in the Software settings.
  • Updated the design of the Quantize options:
  • The % character next to the Swing Amount and Quantize Amount controls are larger.
  • The Quantize To lists are now arranged vertically.
  • The Play button is now deactivated when external sync is enabled.
  • In the External Instrument device, meters are now visible for the Channel list of inputs.

Push 3 - Bugfixes:

  • Fixed the following bugs:
  • When loading a Set with a wavetable selected in the Wavetable device, the device’s visualisation is now reliably shown after loading; this fixes an issue where Push would show “No Device” under certain circumstances.
  • When entering Hot-Swap Mode while the second Macro page of a Rack device is visible, the Rack device can now be hot-swapped.
  • Selecting the second Macro page of a Rack device while holding the Delete button will now delete the Rack device.
  • Push no longer crashes when selecting the first slice of a manually sliced Simpler device by pressing the pad representing that slice while holding the Select button.
  • When switching between two clips in Clip Mode, the clip’s name and parameters are now correctly updated and displayed.
  • Connecting Push 3 to a computer now works correctly when the currently selected track contains a Wavetable device.
  • The timing of MIDI coming out of Push 3 is now more accurate, especially at higher audio buffer sizes.
  • When sliding between pads to change pitch on Push 3 with the Repeat button active, the repeated notes now follow the pitch bend and timbre correctly.
  • Fixed a typo in the message that appears on Push’s display after successfully authorizing Live.
  • The Transpose parameter is now correctly available in Sampler’s main bank on Push 3.
  • The waveform in Push’s Clip View for audio clips is now correctly updated when dragging warp markers around or when using the ÷2 or ×2 buttons.
  • Max for Live devices that observe the values of controls without getting them will now work with Push 3.
  • Push 3 will now retain the last chosen buffer size after being rebooted.
  • When nudging a Simpler slice’s start position past the end marker of the sample, Push will no longer crash in Standalone Mode.
  • After changing the metronome sound setting on Push 3, and.then restarting the unit, the sound setting is now preserved.
  • Previously, files with names containing percent characters would not show correctly on Push.
  • A MIDI track’s instrument can now be played when its input routing is set to “FromPush”.
  • After Push starts up in Standalone Mode, there is now less of a delay before certain features start to work. Also, the first device or Set loaded after starting Push will take longer than before if it uses Max for Live.
  • The playhead in Push 3’s Clip View of audio clips is now correctly displayed when using the ÷2 or ×2 buttons.
  • It is now possible to open the same Set twice in a row via Live’s Push browser label.
  • An icon now appears to indicate whens a selection cannot be dropped when attempting to drag and drop it on or within the Push label in Live.
  • The demo song will now be loaded on startup if the onboarding tutorial wasn’t finished during Push’s previous run.
  • When starting Push 3 in Standalone Mode, the bottom row of buttons are no longer lit.
  • It is now possible to use Max for Live patches and presets that utilize Node.js on Push 3 in Standalone Mode.
  • Toggle controls are once again shown in a white instead of gray when active.
  • The Cue volume can now be reset to its default value by tapping the Volume encoder when holding the Delete button, while the encoder is controlling the Cue volume.
  • Samples and .amxd files collected and saved into Projects no longer show up as duplicates in their respective browser categories.
  • Previously, when holding a step and a note in the Melodic Sequencer + 32 Notes layout, releasing the note after releasing the step would “deactivate” the step sequencer.
  • When saving a Set after renaming it, the Set is correctly saved under the new name.

Microphone recommendation

I’ve searched this thread and the net in general but haven’t found an answer. Hoping someone with some experience can help

I’m looking to spend a couple of hundred dollars on a mic for the push 3 sa.

Want to try and incorporate some vocals into my productions.

I tried my Sm7 with pretty poor results.

I do have an interface that I can use but keen to get something that I can just plug into the Push

Thanks!

does push 3 still not have?

individual tempo per scene

warp marker manipulation via the knobs

I bought 3 mics for the P3SA, but I’m not sure if they’d suit your needs or not.

These all work well once I figured out the low gain issue (needed to adjust gain settings on the computer first, with Live as the interface).

Critter & Guitari’s Microphone is a very cheap portable condenser mic that can saturate nicely when pushed.

Rode PodMic USB - Dynamic mic that can be used in 2 different ways with Push 3. You can use it like any dynamic mic and there is enough gain options on Push 3 to make it useable, OR you can use the USB-A port on Push 3 to provide power, and then use the headphone out, into Push 3’s input. This 2nd method has the cleaner sound over option 1, but it’s not as clean as when using it via USB-C (like when compared to recording direct to an iPad).

Antelope Audio’s Axino Synergy Core modeling mic - This is an interesting one. I picked it up for $200 new. You can choose the mic to model (including an SM7B) and even create an FX chain that will retain its settings after unplugging from the computer.
Like the Rode PodMic, I power it from the USB-A port on Push 3 and then route the monitor out, into Push 3’s inputs.
I would not pay the full price for this especially when it still has a USB-B port. Nothing wrong with that, but I’d be surprised if they don’t replace it with a MKII soon.

Also, I don’t think it sounds like SM7B (which I also have, but haven’t tried with Push 3).

By the way, I like the Rode PodMic better for my talking voice than the SM7B. Doesn’t mean you will like it more, but it is a surprising good mic for the price.

Maybe the Tula mic? I tried one once and thought it was okay but it’s battery powered and small and has noise reduction. Up close vocals won’t work very well but not sure what your application is.

Thanks! That’s super helpful!

I did get the sm7 working using my quad cortex. It actually works quite well (and I can use the effects on the QC on one channel and clean on the other back into the push)

Not what I want really though. I will have a look at those mins and also steering the gain while in controller mode. I haven’t really used it with the computer yet.

How is the midi sync now? Im interested in jitter as both master and slave (the latter I think is possible now too?).

Can you add midi clock delay yet?

Can you add multiple samples to pads in standalone (without using computer)? I wasn’t clear from the manual.

Can you change the MPE settings for playing MPE external synths (e.g. telling it to use upper or lower channels, like you can in desktop) in standalone?

Thanks so much!

got mine today and spent the better par of the evening with it. coming from elektron gear everything felt a little ‘laggy’. the machine mostly works great but theres no way im ever going to use it without being able to look at it. my main gripe is that you have to wait for the scroller to catch up constantly.

experienced quite a few bugs my first session, updated, and continued to have (different) problems. installing the packs on this thing is brutal so I just let it go for now.

im going to give this thing an earnest shot, but if portable music making is my game im coming around to the idea of a macbook to release me from my desktop. this is “simplified ableton in a box” imo, w/ mpe and an audio interface. i felt like when i was using it I was using a controller slammed on top of a computer software. i could feel that it was manipulating the software underneath it, always a hair behind. an odd thing i didnt think id miss as Im not an expert with all the stock sysnths etc were the ableton help menus. the lightbulb button on mine never gave me the information I was looking for despite it seeming to be there for that

bought this hoping to do sound design. without being able to use max4live or even map lfos i might have made a mistake. woops. it may go back.

Just to make it clear, m4l works perfectly well in Push 3 standalone. Some objects are missing, but I bet that 99% of the devices don’t use them.
As for the lfo mapping, there’s already some free modified lfos that you can find in the web.

All of the M4L device that I used in Live work on PUSH 3, has anyone come across anything that doesn’t work? I’m impressed by the speed at which new features and bug fixes are coming out, Ableton are definitely invested in this, unlike other manufacturers it’s their only hardware, I like that!
