Push 3 Users Thread

Even though the push I received was faulty and I had to send it back today it’s been a long time since I have been so excited about an instrument. It’s not cheap of course but considering what you actually get compared to other things I think it’s very competitive.

Just as a wave table synth with MPE pads it’s kind of worth the price already imo

Was really wonderful to play it. Can’t wait to get it back

Yeah the MPE side of thing has been fantastic for me.

I’m just swithering a tad on how much I’d actually use it standalone! An extra £800 just to save me some cable mess is a lot but, to be honest, it’s one of those daft wee issues most of you would think nothing of but that annoys me enough to think that alone could almost be worth it :joy:

We spent a small fortune in the garden this year getting a nice veranda type thing in the garden and a nice big dining set and it’s become a lovely spot to sit at whether it’s sunny or raining. Lots of birds and squirrels visiting now and the likes. Def would be nice to sit out and jam some cheesy MPE synth lines with nature as inspiration :joy:

It definitely (still) has quircks and bugs, but it’s honestly damn nice.
The workflow is quite nice, even if it needs practice to be efficient/fast on it.
To me it shines in the two tips of the production chain :

  • it’s super nice to sketch ideas and make sound design.
  • it’s quite promising as a performance device, especially with its ADAT capabilities and with the help (in my case) of home made M4L devices.

For anything in between, though, nothing replaces the computer. I’m talking of detailed, microtimed drum programming, precise automations, set preparation (ordering tracks, coloring, complex routing, etc…).

To be fair, that’s the bit of the process I genuinely get less involved with. I don’t under appreciate the importance of the micro producing side of things but I’m firmly in the “it’s only a hobby” camp these days that I largely blunder my way through that side of things.

None of the Push devices helped me finish tracks but for generating quick and often fun stuff to build on if I really dug the track, they’ve always been great.

I noticed yesterday for the first time that my unit seems to have the problem of hitting one pad and sometimes it triggers another. When I hit certain pads at certain locations, an adjacent pad will light up (see video below). I really like my Push 3 (Controller), and hope I don’t need to return it. I plan to file a support ticket with Ableton to see if there’s a workaround, or if they want me to return it. I seem to recall others who had this issue “resolved” it by changing sensitivity settings of the pads, but one of the things I like is how very, very sensitive the pads are. Next to the overall very high build quality of the unit, the pad sensitivity is my favorite part of the Push 3 (I’d say more sensitive than my Linnstrument)!

Edit: After submitting a ticket to Ableton, and still waiting for a response, I increased the “Threshold” from the default setting of 7 up to 10, which seems to solve the issue I was having without much change to light touch playing I am looking for, so maybe can just leave it there. Will see what Ableton says about it too.

I’m really liking mine, aside from the bugs I’ve mentioned previously. Support is finally starting to work with me on them, which is a huge improvement on the service side. Fingers crossed there will be a resolution.

Things I’m really loving:

  • MPE is fun.
  • Portability! I used it on my dining room table for a month before moving it in with my other gear, and rarely felt limited.
  • Wavetable synth in a box with pads
  • Drum programming is almost as immediate and fun as on my Elektrons (though not quite)
  • Inputs mean its potential as a performance centerpiece is very real
  • The Push (in any variety) makes Clip View make a lot more sense to me
  • External Instrument device makes controlling and hearing other hardware a breeze
  • If I’m sticking with the Push and its 2 inputs, I can get much closer to a “finished” sounding track than with my other hardware into my PC, before getting to the “tape recorder” and mixing phases if that makes sense.

Things I dislike:

  • Importing/ exporting projects isn’t seamless and is pretty awkward - I haven’t done it much and don’t see myself doing so in the future.
  • The bugs. They haven’t been squashed, but see above.
  • Lots of things aren’t properly supported in SA at the moment - they can be imported in a project, but can’t be created/ edited on SA. Drum racks, some parameters on some instruments/effects, track grouping, follow actions etc. All the little things mentioned throughout the thread, basically.

Question: does anybody know if I can wirelessly control a project fully with Ableton Link and Push? I haven’t delved too deeply, but it would be amazing to completely eliminate the USB cable.

I like using the Push 3 MPE pads for pitch bends. I’ve used it with several non-mpe synths with the MPE Control effect, converting NotePB to pitch bend, then selecting a Pitch Range multiplier. However, some vsts need an even greater Pitch Range than the MPE Control allows (I’m trying to control the Korg Odyssey plugin, and I think I will need 16x to map it correctly to the pads). Does anyone know of a Max4Live (or other) solution that multiplies the pitch range?

not sure if this is common knowledge but stumbled across this…

I made an instrument rack with 3 different instruments (wave table, drift and analog) in Live
Then mapped the chain selector to a macro knob and adjusted the mapping so it goes from 0-2
Exported the rack to Push
Now in a single clip, each step can have a different instrument from the rack if you param lock the chain selector macro.
That’s wild

Yeah! And you can set up the chain selector so that it crossfades between the instruments. You want full range on the macro if you do that.

Yep the chain selector and instrument/FX racks combo is very powerful and much underated.

For those who own both machines:
Can you access (read/write) the OT’s card (USB mode) directly from the standalone?
Can you set the Push to save at 44.1 24?

Was excitedly awaiting my new Push, due to arrive yesterday/today, but suddenly the tracking info got weird (marked “address corrected” via FedEx). Called them up and apparently the package was damaged and has to be returned to Ableton. Posting here to vent my frustration after planning my weekend around being home to receive this device. :imp:

Damn!!! Been there before. It completely sucks.

Are you sure standalone is going to solve your issue to your satisfaction? I was under the impression that the battery will still gradually drain if you use it in controller mode with only USB connection to a computer, but I havent checked these facts recently.

Yes, this is true, it drains slowly if only connected via USB. I contacted support about it because at first I assumed something must be wrong, but they confirmed it’s normal. The power spec page on their site is kind of vague and misleading. I ended up buying an extra power supply from Ableton so that I’d have one for each of the two main places I use it.

Does P3’s (controller version) audio interface work when Live is not running? (P3 powered on). Can I monitor an instrument plugged into the Push 3 when Live is not running? Thanks.

Yes. It will still work as an interface without Live running.

Yeah it’ll drain but c2 hours works for me anyway.

Think I’m going to go for it and move on from crying about usb c hub power :joy:

But this has to be a bug that Ableton should solve by now. If you use it in controller mode without the Battery it should function exactly the same way, so there should be no use at all for the battery therefor its hilarious that it gets drained.

Hub power only provides enough for a dimmer display and pad lights (if you’re lucky and it works at all!) so some power drainage would be expected in my scenario as it’ll be fully lit up and what not. So wouldn’t say it’s a bug myself
