Push 2 still worth it in 2020

It’s been said before but I really think the Push 2 will still be a relevant device even after the Push 3 comes out. I would get standard and upgrade as needed and at discounted price - Ableton sometimes does offer discounts, I don’t recall the exact periods. What I did was get the Push 2 with the Intro but very quickly realised I needed the standard and then later upgraded to Suite when they offered a discount - I had been saving for it anyway so it was perfect timing.

Unless I’m misunderstanding your statement midi can be live recorded straight into the arrangement. It doesn’t record polyaftertouch but, afaik it does the rest…

Not working as expected in arrangement view. Works as expected in session view. Maybe try it yourself and report back. I have been reading that article before trying. Would be nice to be proven wrong.

Are we saying automation recording doesn’t work in Arrangement view with Push 2 or that it doesn’t work at all? The latter is entirely false, btw. I never use the clip mode and automation of parameters totally does get recorded in Arrangement view. Actually it’s annoying if it does it when an OB plugin is left with record arm on accidentally, for example.

i still love the Push 1 just for those knobs. if they made a controller that was just the top half of the push i’d buy it in a second.

…i personally abandoned ableton a decade ago…

but one of my oldest pro audio full on friends, abandoned everthing else for it…since he had push under his hands first time…

and if it’s still worth it?
it’s the best beyond pad and everything else flawless fluent complex controler integration with a software i’ve ever heard of…

and same as with ot…if u can’t get it right with this, it’s u, who just can’t get it right…
the user…not the gadget…

and a little off topic ps to craig…we’re obviously hangin’ out in here too much…
we’re better more off, puttin’ wigs on bits…

I would say suite is worth it just for max 4 live for me. There are loads of great patches you can download without having to open a patcher yourself. That being said, setting up a custom device for any hardware synth you have to work directly from push is great. I have a tx81z, for example, that I’ve built a control patch for which not only adds actual controls to a slightly awkward, button only fm synth, but also allows automation sequencing.

It’s also nice to have all the ableton synths. They may not be your go to options, but it’s not the worst thing to have backup options.

If you’re just using live for sequencing / recording, Suite may not be worth the extra outlay.

I was trying to record automation in arrangement view over a prerecorded audio clip. For example, recording a filter sweep over an audio clip. Looks like this is possible by unarming the track and then recording and moving the paramater, then it records the automation but doesn’t overwrite the clip. ableton addressed this in the comments of this video. Cool, I learned something!

Them I need an explanation why Push 2 doesn’t record in arrangement. And also why it didn’t record aynthing when I tried (using Digitone MIDI track). Ableton is in that regard a bit strange imho … I have had often problems understanding why I don’t see any CCs being recorded. Maybe it only works when a CC is mapped to a knob. I will try later…

Hi Pete,

I’ve just tested this with my Push 2 and the most recent version of Ableton, to be certain.

If you’re recording straight into the arrangement view the yellow link (automation arm) needs to be activated, as shown in the sample from the Ableton manual.

If you already have things in arrangement and want to record into existing midi the ‘+’ symbol (midi arrangement overdub) need to be on too.

In both cases the track will need to be armed (red arm recording symbol) to make this work.

I hope this makes sense!

Cheers,

Jimmy

It’s still worth it in 2024. Just bought one with Standard for only 499 from reverb…great deal and ready to work ITB for awhile…be saving a ton of cash by not GASSING.
