PULSAR-23 by SOMA

Sounds great! What are you sequencing it with?

thanks! nothing else so far, just using the internal looper sequencing on the pulsar and playing the lyra live. ill probably try sequencing with the ep-133 and op-z eventually

gonna avoid filling this thread with too many posts, lil lyra and pulsar action again

might have to give a volume warning for this one, the lyra is spitting out the crackliest and crunchiest bass tones ive found

this one got ifself a new post, first jam that felt like a decent enough tune to stand on its own. just jammed over a pattern i made on the pulsar and slapped lyra sounds on there. i brought the tempo down at one point and it felt gnarly as hell. excited to see what this sounds like in my car

ill put a volume warning on this one too

tried to get more chaotic and use more of the patch points than i typically do. im liking what i get when i connect the kick env output to the lyra’s cv delay input

i realized the other day that i can connect the diy rollz modules i made, that’ll get things even weirder. but i gotta get more practice to figure out how it works well together

Dude you got a great ear and the tonal palette on these tracks rips - nice work! Only feedback I’d give is that some of the drum elements don’t sound in time - p23 has a metronome function. I depend on this a lot !

was this reply intended for me? looks like the forum thought it was for someone else

if so, thanks! and yes i use the metronome, those last two examples had the tempo being modulated by the shaos module so the timing is all over the place

I’m sure it was for you :+1:

I just got the polivoks BD+bass module which is used in the 1984 delivered the other day, and I love it. The BD was the only instrument that I didn’t love on the pulsar and I really love this one. The bass is super gnarly and a ton of fun, the filter is amazing.

This is just a one shot take but here I am playing around with just the p23.

oh and btw you can order it now, in case that wasn’t obvious

Sounds really good! Can you install the BD module without the polivoks filter for the bass or do you need to install both? Was the installation part tricky?

Vey interested but I’m afraid that shipping + custom might get pricey.

Ha oh yeah I replied wrong Message

thank you!

The install is just the one single card, everything is on there.

Installation was extremely easy, basically plug and play but I would recommend watching a vid for complete beginners. If you’ve built a PC before, you can figure it out. Otherwise, someone on the soma discord posted a guide I’d recommend checking out. https://youtu.be/rHNIpPF_6ug

One disclaimer, the female pin headers on mine had some plastic gunk left over and I had to clear it out with a blade before it would fit on. Probably a fluke but figured I’d mention.

The price all told in US was about $325 I think. Not cheap, but… cheaper than an entire 1984 edition!

Thank you for the detailed answer, helps a lot and very nice video… reassuring anybody can do it

But yeah… expensive but a cool mod and give you new sounds to the machine which was already an expensive “investment”.

Looking forward hearing some more sounds from you!

Thanks for posting the video and the sounds.
I just signed up for the pre-order.

Listening to the old BD vs. 1984 BD comparisons on YT neither I can decide whether the 1984 BD is better nor I can decide whether I want the new sound at all.
At least it is different for sure.

EDIT: And if I consider some patching then decision gets far more difficult.

I actually really like the one that’s there now. I do like the idea of different and the option to swap back. I was mostly waiting to know how difficult/easy it could be. Seeing the video was my selling point. The creator of the module is a super nice guy too, so I’m going to be excited to support the creation.

The module is built and shipped from Poland so if you are in the EU there are no hidden custom/import charges.

sync’d the lyra voices to the pulsar shaos, next i gotta try messing with the delay cv at the same time. and i saw a guy playing the switches on the lyra which i havent really been doing much and it opened up a new world of playability for me.

put in more practice with the pulsar and lyra, this time with a bit more interaction with the drum pattern rather than letting it loop while i focus on the lyra. i also have a fuzz pedal on the side to run single voices through and im digging mixing the fuzz signal with the dry signal. i did that with the snare in this jam

I a/b tested them at Superbooth and while I liked the 1984 kick quite a bit it isn’t as characterful and the 1984 polyvox bass filter I didn’t like at all - just goes into a high pitch squeal as you open it up vs the satisfying growl of the og bass filter

I do however really like the stainless smooth metal chassis - I am a bit ocd for the little paint pits on the textured aluminium box I have but apparently they are all covered in tiny points where a tinsy bit didn’t hold paint

recorded some of my nullband jam yesterday and went over it with some 404 fx. i think im just gonna keep practicing the pulsar lyra combination on nullband, it feels like im actually performing and gets me into that think-on-my-feet headspace even if its like 1 person listening.
