PS5 Pro

I’m debating about pre-ording a PS5 Pro when it opens on Sept 26th (most likely I will, unless I get closed out by bots  ).

The price sucks, but much like the PS4 Pro it will prove itself over time as more and more titles are updated for it. On the PS4 Pro the boost mode worked on many titles without patches, so the PS5 Pro could run titles like Elden Ring better out of the gate.

It’s completely a luxury item, but I feel that if I don’t pre-order, it could be a long while before I could get my hands on one.

Any one else thinking about pre-ordering?

is scalping ps5’s still a thing?

I just bought a PS5, so will be waiting a while on the Pro.

Just like with Apple, I prefer to not get a unit from the first batch since design fixes are often applied shortly after.

I don’t think it is. They seemed to have caught up here in the US. However, it could still be a thing in other regions, as it’s a big world out there.

Yeah, I got mine two years ago knowing the pro was probably just around the corner. Honestly I just don’t think there have been enough huge big budget games that take full advantage of the hardware to warrant the purchase right now. Alan Wake 2 is in my opinion the most beautiful game on the system currently and it ran just fine for my taste.

I’m the kind of dude who used to play PC games on older hardware and just lowered the settings all the way down…I dont care about graphics and the PS5 will be fine for me until the PS6.

Exactly - I’m playing Elden (PS5), Sekiro (PS4 edition since there isn’t a PS5 version yet) and Wukong (PS5) and have zero complaints. Two years from now when the 5Pro is down to ~$500 and the best games struggle is probably when I’ll buy.

But my real reason is that I’ve settled on a Voltage Lab 2 as my big toy buy for this fall. Better to enjoy the Pro in a few years when it will feel like a real upgrade.

$780 with the disc drive is a big no for me. In fact, I play my PS5 so little these days that the upcoming release of the Pro is causing me to think about selling the whole kit and focusing more on music without feeling guilty that I’m not playing the games I bought enough. Who has time for these 100+ hour games anyway? I’d have to put my GF and friends on hold for 2 months to get through a single game.

That said, Returnal and Elden Ring are sick and I wish I had more time to play them!

What I’m ready for is Switch 2.0.

$400 Switch 2 released shortly after $780 PS5 Pro?

Could be interesting.

I’d love to pick up a Switch 2, but might be a 2025 purchase if it becomes an instant buy for everyone else.

The rumor mills seem to think the new Switch will be released in early 2025.

I didn’t get a Switch until early last year and man… I didn’t think I would care too much and I was waiting for a successor but a friend sold me his for very cheap.
I’ve since got back to playing the Metroid Prime remaster and Mario Wonder. Freaking great little system and loads of indies!

On the topic of PS5 Pro though, no need for me. I think PS5 as it is already is fine.
I am playing Dragon’s Dogma 2 again and still wish it performed a little better in the busy areas, but I think it’s beautiful and fun.

And Astrobot is pure joy! I just wish there was some kind of multiplayer since my kiddos argue about who’s turn it is.

I’ve described it in exactly the same way. It’s pure joy and fun in the same way Mario wonder was for me. The lil bot is so dang cute!

Great point! The title that impressed me the most so far was Ratchet and Clank, but it definitely feels like the PS5 has a lot of untapped potential. Too many titles (esp cross platform titles) seem to just run OK, and that doesn’t bode well for a souped up PS5 that requires some TLC from devs.

Call that $860 in California between sales tax and the electronics recycling fee/tax. Yeah, no thanks.

I have a PS5 on a 4k OLED tv and in another room a fairly beefy PC that I just upgraded to a 4k OLED monitor. I have a handful of the same games on both and I don’t feel like I’m missing out massively with the PS5 versus my PC. There is a marginal difference, but not worth spending that kind of money to rectify. For that price you’d be better off getting your hands on any kind of OLED tv if you don’t have one already.

TLDR Maybe I was spoiled by the long tail of the PS4 or just the plain long PS3 or the much cheaper PS2, or maybe it's general inflation and the economy to blame... but the PS5 at base level does not feel like it has justified itself to me, and the Pro does even less to convince me that will be the case in 4-5 years when it is time to move on.

I also have written somewhere else in the distant past that I got a PS5 about 18 months after they came out. I didn’t pay scalper pricing, but I normally get a console like 3-4 years after they come out and everything’s cheaper. That wouldn’t have made a difference this generation as the console is still the same price from launch, the controllers have gone UP in price, and the games are hit and miss whether I would have paid less in the intervening years. However, at the time I felt that I had paid a lot and I was banking on Sony to come along with games that I would not be able to get somewhere else. 3+ years into my PS5 experience with the exception of Ratchet and Clank and Spiderman 2, I don’t really feel like I’ve played a game where I would not have been willing to wait for that experience on PC or play the game on the PS4 I had before.

Also, can Sony get it’s shit together and make a controller that lasts more than a year before it wears out? At $80 a pop and 3 controllers later EVERY one has developed a stick issue on the right stick within a year, and I’m not abusive and I play what averages out to 2 hours a day.

Damn after writing that rant I need to double check my brokerage account, pretty sure I bought some Sony stock during the pandemic and if I haven’t sold yet now is definitely the time.

I would not support such a price policy from sony. They are testing limits.
All those exclusives will come to PC. And you can almost buy a kick ass PC for a few dollars more and then you have the entire PC Plattform.
Switch 2 will be great also and not that pricy.

Honestly if I had that perspective I think I would buy a Pro. I just haven’t noticed any game I’ve played run less than excellently. I’m not picky about frame rates or graphics as long as it’s stable with little pop-in though so maybe I’m simply not the target market for a mid-generation refresh.

Switched to a high spec PC. Best decision i ever made. Not just for ultra settings but Modding communities as well.

I have mixed feelings about this Pro. I definitely won’t be buying it, the price is nearly $1000 CAD here which is wild. It would be nice to have 4K 60FPS but not enough to justify that price.

I think my biggest annoyance with the PS5 is that it doesn’t feel like enough games are using it to its full potential. Too many games are still being released on the PS4 at the same time as the PS5, so they’re having to optimize for both console versions which I think probably hurts the PS5 version to an extent. Now that we’re mid-cycle with the PS5 I would hope that more games come out that are dedicated for it and take more advantage of its power and abilities.
