Prophet 6 Filter Envelope settings. Help!

Hey guys,

I am playing chords/pads on the prophet 6 but I dont want the filter sweep to restart each time I play a new chord. I want to change chords but have the filter open and close slowly and it not start that cycle each time I change the chord? What am I doing wrong? is there a hidden setting for filter envlopes?

Cheers

Try turning the “ENV AMOUNT” knobs to 0 then route the LFO to the filters

But I only want to do one cycle of the filter opening and then closing. If I route the filter to the LFO this will then repeat the cycle surely?

LFO is the only other onboard modulation source other than aftertouch. How long do you intend “one cycle” to run without repeating?

Like 1-2 seconds max.

I don’t mean to confuse things but I feel that this is very simple on other synths.

Essentially I just need to stop the filter envelope from triggering each time a new note is played. So essentially when I am playing legato, I’d like the filter envelope to be where it was on the last note and not restart?

I got the Behinger model d recently and this was really easy to find in the manual but haven’t found anything in the P6 manual as such.

Have you tried different key modes? The manual says these only work in Unison mode, which would be unfortunate. It sounds like you’re essentially looking for a ‘paraphonic’ mode, where all subsequent notes share the envelope/filter of the first note as long as it is held down.

That’s correct, I’ll try unison mode however you can’t freely play chords this way… you can only play chords in unison by pre-selecting the notes and then pressing unison. However, this locks each note you press to the chord structure you pre-selected.

Why not check on the Sequential Circuits forum

Just use an expression pedal with the LPF cutoff input.

That would work I suppose

Is this what you’re looking for?

I re-read the above posts and I see that key mode is for unison only. Kind of a bummer.
Did you find a way to achieve the effect you’re looking for - other than an external control?
I’m thinking of getting a P6 soon and would love to know.

It was easy on the Model D because that’s a standard feature on monosynths. The P6 also has this behavior in its “mono mode”, which is unison.

As far as I know, the behavior you’re asking for is very rare on poly synths — especially analog poly synths. You want the synth to treat its independent, per-voice filter envelopes as a single envelope controlled by a “polyphonic legato” key mode. It’s a cool idea, and I’m sure some poly synths have it, but it’s the opposite of what most players want most of the time. I’m only saying this to help you get past the “this should be easy, where’s the switch to turn it on” mindset and think about more creative solutions.

If I was trying to get that kind of sound, I’d turn filter envelope amount to zero, hook up an expression pedal and control the cutoff manually. It’s not the same as “mono envelope mode” since you lose programmable attack and decay times, but I bet you can get close enough with a little practice.
