Program change parameter locks non-existent :(

I was so excited when I saw this BSII flipping presets via parameter locks from the monomachine in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c8GV3PT0rEc

Then I was so sad when after hours of exploration my octatrack couldn’t even do that

I mean REALLY sad.

This comes up fairly regularly. Couple thoughts:

Does the gear you’re trying to sequence support MSB/LSB changes? These are done with CCs and you can lock CCs easily.
Do you have a computer with MIDI ports near your OT? There’s a few programs out there that will let you translate CCs (or whatever) to program changes if you don’t mind a little latency.
The Bomebox coming out soon should be able to do this. MIDIpal might too, but I’m not sure.

Hey there,

I saw that bomebox, but I’m sure that’s going to be at least a couple hundred and this is the only thing I’d be using it for so idk if its worth the expense.

Unfortunately the program changes follow standard midi and require more than a simple CC message, which the octa will not digest in parameter locks. The program changes work fine when changing patterns though. In other words, program changes can’t be recorded nor played back in the middle of a pattern… Even my mc307 does this. Not to mention the simpler mono machine.

I will definitely translate using some type of software… It’s just too awesome of a concept not to experiment with. Has anyone used MIDIox to translate single CC messages to program changes? Or does anyone know of an iPad app that can do this type of translation, cause that would be a little less inconvenient…

You can also setup Pure Data on headless RaspberryPi with cheap USB<>MIDI cable for any MIDI translation tasks. It might need some tinkering in the beginning but then it’s easy to create such cheap one-purpose modules for any situation you could imagine.

I used it for OSC>MIDI translation. OSC comming from the TouchOSC on tablet, feeding standard MIDI to HW.

Another project was translation of hard-coded MIDI CC’s of Faderfox LV1 to a custom ones to control OT with it.

Oooooo, that sounds very tempting… And probably cheap as I have a USB audio cable already. I’ll check it out.

I went a little nuts and hooked up everything tonight and made a video showing parameter locks and midiox translating… Uploading now. I’ll post it here.

Ah, fellow Pi user ! Haven’t tinkered with mine (original ram starved slow one from first batch) in ages, but it worked a treat headless as a USB host for controller x to controller y, it just took a bit of scripting (clumsy scripting) to determine which controller was attached and which device was there, it was fit for purpose and convenient, as a Max stalwart I’d sooner have gone with pd which I installed but I think I was wondering if latency would creep in, my script works on the command line with ALSA and runs no programs. Might need toinvestigate that PD route as I’d be able to engineer the flexibility I need quite easily in the patcher whereas my unix scripting holds me back. So, big question, Any issues with latency before I jump in ? Super keen to explore the new faster Pi with all those ports as it could allow some nifty routing and may bump performance a bit

I didn’t notice any significant latency issues with RPi when translating MIDI CC’s from FF LV1 to OT. Controlling volume levels, crossfader, various track parameters etc. but no big delays. Obviously there must be some latency but nothing I could even ‘feel’. Just for the record, with the soft synths on regular PC I can ‘feel’ the latency above 10-13ms. My guess is that if you avoid any audio processing you’ll be fine.

Ah, this is great because I’m thinking about getting a Pi for similar stuff myself. I was thinking of using some Node libraries for this instead of PD. I figured PD would be a little sluggish on that little processor, plus it seems easier to create tools to load and change settings with Node rather than PD (though maybe not). Good to hear that performance at least doesn’t seem to be an issue. Thanks guys
