This is a long post but I hope it’s worth it for someone.
I’ve been using DT for a little over a year now, today I came across something could be a possible game changer, unless everyone knows about it already and I’m just late to the party.
I was playing about with an idea today with the DT and DN.
I remembered that you can send MIDI from a keyboard to DT auto channel while holding a trig and it will lock in the note value.
What I didn’t know is that it will also PLAY THE TRIG, p-locks and all.
So this means you can hold a trig and hit a note on the keyboard and have it play all the sound locks. It’s basically trig preview feature but using TRIG + NOTE instead of TRIG + YES.
I then realised that if, instead of using a keyboard, I send midi from the DN to the DT… then I would be able to sequence DT’s audio track from external midi source, then just use DT’s internal audio track sequencer to store the sound locks/p-locks, then when I want to do a fill just press and hold one of the trigs.
Unlike multimap where you’re mostly locked to whatever sound is saved to the pool, here you can have up to 64 sound/p-locks laid out in the grid record, allowing you to edit them in real time as they are playing. Like an awesome hacky “multimap on steroids”? This feels like pseudo-scenes almost?
What’s more, it works for A4, DN --> and DT <-- (those are the only things I’ve tested but it’s possible it will work for other boxes?)
Here’s what I done:
DT - TRK1
- Load up any sound
- drop into grid record mode and drop down a few trigs
- p-lock as normal on the trigs, move a filter around, sound lock a trig, do whatever.
- Mute the TRK1 sequence track so that when you press play, you don’t hear anything.
DN - MIDI TRK1
- Add in a few notes
- Make sure the notes are being sent to the DT’s TRK 1 MIDI channel
- press play
You should now hear DT track 1 sound start playing the notes you input on DN.
Now the awesome bit.
DT - TRK1
- Drop into GRID record and press and hold any of the trigs.
- The sound will change to whatever p-locks are on the trig + the incoming midi notes!
This has proved insanely useful for me, I can sequence DT from another sequencer (It probs works using midi loopback trick too) and then just use the DT sequencer as a sort of “p-lock/ soundlock manager”.
Sadly this doesn’t seem to work with OB, IE sending midi to track 1 of the OB plugin doesn’t play the held trig 
only via MIDI USB or DIN.
My only issue so far with this new “workflow” is the potential to accidentally clear a trig when performing as it relies on pressing a trig to activate it. If there was a way to “lock” trigs so you can’t accidentally remove them would be awesome. The workaround is to simply save the pattern before you go ham so you can easily reload.
The other minor issue is that the note on the trig will of course be changed to whatever the last note it received was, so it will essentially edit your trig every time you press it.
This all makes me wonder what other hidden power the DT has, that’s possibly locked behind software /workflow limitations rather than hardware ones!
It would be cool to see less hacky feeling implementation of something like this
