Hi,
I use Hd650 at home to make music, and have BeyerDynamic DT990 and 880 for listening to music. BUT when I have to travel I want to take my DN and only one set of headphones. The headphones need to be for listening to music on my phone, watching films on my laptop AND making music on the DN. I used to have some Beyerdynamic t51p that I think were great, but my wife broke them. I replaced them with sennheiser hd25, but they sound…pretty terrible compared to all my other headphones.
Any suggestions from smallish, portable, good sounding, on or overear headphones that can be useful for all purposes?
A was asking myself a kind of similar question these days. The AKG 702s I use at home are far from being portable and I would love something ideally foldable and with Bluetooth and cable for increased flexibility. The ones I found were AKG-361 and 371. Would like to hear if there’s any opinions on these in here, too?
The HD25 have a really different sound signature than your others headphones (HD650, warmish darkish ; Beyer more on the dry side with high freq boosted), they must sound weird to you If you want warmer sound more closer to the HD650 : Sennheiser Momentum (Over the ear or On Ear, your choice, I prefer the former) or Sony MDR-1A I would say. Both are more commercial than monitoring with less dynamic/punch in the low freq but a warmer sound that could be closer to HD650 with less headrom (closed vs open headphones) and a bit more lush to it. If you want to try something funny with good mids and orthodynamic drivers : Fostex T50RP mk3 (beware, they are “semi-open”, understand the isolation from outside sounds is pretty shitty). Due to the mobile context, I would focus on having a removable cable (because it is going to break faster than your headphones).
If you are open to iem : Shure SE215 are nice good and sturdy.
For the Bluetooth + cable ones, I am ok with my Sony WH1000MX4 for listening (using them for phone calls in the street is awful for the callee, they pick up every sound around you but your voice).
I use hd25 in this case as well, but I also agree with you that dt880 and hd650 are far nicer ! (I have HD 650, dt880 as well as dt770). Grado sr60 aren’t bad and are really portable (not very flat but pleasant to listen to) but there’s zero isolation…
To be honest I mostly use IEMs on the go…
Appreciate all the opinions/guidance here. Maybe in this case the best headphones really are the ones I already have. I’ll give the SD25 a few more turns, see if I can get used to them.
