If you would want to try the tracker workflow the M8 is an absolute beast. Especially with the mkII announcement
As i said on the post that isnât for me at all, i really prefer as someone else said âhappy incidentsâ, with that i would feel like programmic a trick, nice synthe negines tho
Iâve had a circuit tracks and I agree that they are super fun and creative but not quite powerful enough.
Iâve never found anything else quite so fast and fun other than Koala on the iPad.
The MC-101 is more powerful but less immediate and fun. Gave Millar has loads of great videos about the pros and cons. He is a Roland and Novation super fan.
I know you donât want one but the Polyend Tracker is my fav happy accident machine because of the generative features.
play+ would be my suggestion.
fukin deadly yoke.
Korg Electribe.
man i swear that if it had a synth engine i would try it, itâs cheaper than the m8 and i wouldnât have to pay fees. i really hope they upgrade it soon. (also the screen is bigger than the m8 so thatâs better)
I didnât see any one mention the MPC. Though some would argue itâs not super portable so thereâs that.
If they added the engines from Play+ it would be amazing.
That being said you might enjoy Play+ (I havenât tried it)
itâs another happy accident machine. synth engines are really nice. itâs very quickly become one of my all time favourites.
EP-133 KO II from TE.
Think most things have been suggested here. One issue is the OP1 is so unique that you wonât find that workflow anywhere else.
I like you would rather not use sequencers and prefer to play stuff in. I use the Boss RC505mk2 and then rotate the gear I use with it, itâs a fantastic looper, but not super portable so I assume that is out.
Octatrack is an interesting suggestion, could be a good option.
Think someone said MPC - that certainly seems the most feature rich option on a small ish budget. The MPC one plus is a crazy good deal for the money-so powerful.
Iâve also used the Roland SH-4d in the past and the SP404mk2. Both are very different but great fun to play with and reward live playing.
Or just save and go for the OP1 field. Itâs small, portable, theyâve upgraded the sound engine so I sounds better and now stereo, you like the workflow⌠could be what you really want!
Model Samples punches way above itâs weight
Sorry, should have read your post properly. Another fun thing Iâve been doing is sequencing Ableton note with the oxi one. The fact that my main sequencer that powers my entire setup can be taken on the road and used wirelessly with my phone is insane. With an iPad and the many crazy apps it has it would be insane.
Also means you get to use the Oxi One for everything so gives you practice while youâre not at home.
Just some ideas but Iâve been down the same road as you with the OP-1
Youâd probably like the ELZ_1 Play, but itâs still unclear whether they are going to sell these outside of the small initial batch.
Second this.
Do you want to work or do you want to groove?
On a serious note - if you disliked âdigital soundingâ engines, get something analog and pair it with sampler/sequencer. Maybe Korg Monologue and SP-404 MKII, both can be battery powered. Or a great sounding VA like Roland S-1 and pair it with Koala on your phone for ultimate portability.
âŚif udonât want to end up with a op1 again, the only other âjust have fun all in one music thingâ would be one of these battery powered mpc live boxesâŚnot that handy, but u get the same sample into the blue whatever thing going, plus synthengines, plus fingerdrumming fun and endless overdubbing, all loose or tight sequenced, flexible triggered and can take that all the way to final mixdowns with the feel of a nice oldschool standalone taperecorderâŚand itâs under ur budget threshholdâŚ
Deluge
Polyend stuff is all really good
New Yamaha Seqtrak
Some good suggestions already, a few more:
Smpltrek
Circuit Rhythm
Liven - all are cool and fun.
Did you have an OP-1 Field before? Or the Original?
The Field is a worlds difference in sound quality. I know youâre wanting something else but it sounds like you kinda just want an OP-1 which nothing will give you that feel.
Iâd say just save up for a Field. Get an iPad or use your phone and you can use apps like the Moog Minimoog app which should fix the lack of âwarm synthsâ the OP-1 has.
The only other thing Iâd recommend is either the M8 (which youâre not looking for a tracker and it makes sense) or the Deluge which also doesnât sound like a possibility.
