Playing live - to octatrack or not to octatrack?

Hi folks

to octatrack or not to octatrack
that is the question

Meaning use its through machines to make use of its scenes and fx / slider for live use

I used to run everything through the OT, lots of fun
Only drawback is limiting your output to 1 stereo, or 2 , but even the second stereo output is not much use for the sound guy

I now have the black trio, so scenes and performances modes on the AR and AK, aswell as the OT
i recently played out live giving 3 separate stereos of the respective machines , which enabled the sound guy more scope in what he could do
but it messed up a bit my mix :frowning:

So even though the AR and AK offer the possibility of separating everything,
id be tempted to root though the OT so that i could
A add extra live fx
B control the mix

But this would potentially be in detriment to the sound quality of the drums bass, etc

any thoughts ???

Thanks

My personal opinion, I know that many disagree: definitely send your devices separately to a mixer!

Do I have to argue? Probably… I just want the routings to be as stable and robust as possible, no risk to distort inside the OT, no risk to have it all stop because of a parameter that was changed by accident, and it’s just easier to handle. Of course you sacrifice the possibility to use fader scenes on the master, but you can go crazy inside the OT channel and cut the bass etc or fade out the whole channel if it might get out of control while the rest is playing as before, which you can basically do on all your channels. Just a robust setup.

In a similar vein, I was playing around with Midi loopbacks for a while, a lot of fun, but it can easily crash your setup (especially external devices, not the OT itself) if a signal gets through that should have been blocked. No, stop it, more complicated button combos, less possibilities, but a standard, safe routing from A to B.

EDIT: I mean a small mixer on the table, not sending each channel separately to the sound guy.

If you’re playing live the difference should be negligible as long as your levels are good going into the OT. I’d rather have a slight loss of fidelity than have a sound guy messing up my mix.

Ok cheers

@ MK7 - I know what you mean,
but bringing my own mixer isnt going to help the sound guy either

one advantage of keeping everything separate is … separate projects
routing things through the OT would mean i could never change the OTs project without stopping all the sound
Whereas having things separate would enable to change say an AK project whilst the rest is playing, then the AR one, then the OT, without having total silence

@ Laughing Animal

Yeah the soundguy is always a potential problem, the only solution would be working with your own soundguy, but that would go over my current budget

So still not decided really!!..

(edit i think the extra creative possibilities are a huge plus going through the OT
looks like Dataline always does that)
