Thanks for your review. It’s exactly what I thought it would be. It’s a parallel universe to the 208C. Minimal overlap. Once I get back to the US I’ll pick one up. Living between Tunisia and Belgium at the moment.

I think the VL2 pre-orders sold out at most retailers but I did just notice that Analogue Haven lists having them in stock:
https://www.analoguehaven.com/pittsburgh-modular/voltage-lab-2/
I’ve had mine for a a couple of weeks now, and can only say I love it. It is my first foray into modular, and I’d be lying if I said I understand half of what I’m doing. But that doesn’t matter because it’s hard not to get great sounds out of it IME.
The oscillators are great, I also have the Taiga keyboard, and though that’s also great, this feels like they offer even more.
Patching also feels better to me than the Taiga, where I ran into a couple of ‘I wish I could’ situations. Not a ding on the Taiga as much as a bigger thumbs up for the Voltage Lab.
The sequencer is interesting and I’ve accidentally gotten some really organic movement out of it. But again, there’s plenty of aspects to it I’ve yet to fully work out.
That’s all nice, I wanted something both immediately enjoyable but with plenty of room to grow into, and this is that in spades.
I received my VL2 earlier this week and just completed the firmware update this morning. Zero problems doing the update with an M1Max Studio and Ventura.
For those who aren’t experienced with Eurorack, be aware that the VL2 is a pair of very large Euro modules in a custom case. Updating the firmware requires unscrewing 20 screws and removing each panel so you can get at their MicroUSB port. The Euro power is properly shrouded so if you know how to gently remove and reinstall small machine screws then you should be able to perform the update with no problems. Be sure to use a #1 phillips (cross) screwdriver.
What ever happened to the VL2 - seems to have disappeared from shops in Australia.
Appears to be in stock at multiple US dealers, and available for direct order in the US and Europe according to the Pittsburgh Modular web page.
Perhaps a distributor issue Down Under?
Not sure if I’ve bought from these mob before but
Yeah, I saw that - they often don’t have stock. I’m thinking places like found sound or the Syd shops … maybe it was too exy for the Aussie market.
Does anyone know is output of the instrument eurorack or line in level? I.e. do i need some kind of output-module to convert signals to line in level so i can connect voltage lab to guitar pedals and so on.
Tried to look this from the manual but couldnt find it.
Thanks for your reply! So if i understood correctly, output level is pretty hot. Can you use build in attenuator to lower levels so that you can connect headphones directly to voltage lab for example?
I missed boat with the first Voltage lab and now i am thinking selling my Pulsar 23 to get this one…
There is a separate headphones out (TRS instead of just TS) that drives any of my headphones just fine.
Microusb?? Ewww
Yeah, but it’s tough to argue with a not-Weasel for $2k. A single front panel USB-C would have been much nicer but likely a much more complex design. (Each of the two panels has its own internal USB, which means they can probably operate completely independently if you wish)
For people who still haven’t bit the bullet, it’s still available everywhere for $1499/1499€ until Monday.
And a few updates were released this month.
Bug Fixes:
----------
- Random Order Evolution Amount is now correctly displayed for the Yellow channel in top row settings
Bug Fixes:
----------
- 1-shot is now correctly displayed for the Yellow channel in top row settings
Bug Fixes:
----------
- External clock now correctly syncs to a rising edge rather than a falling edge.
If I hadn’t missed the Black Friday deal on this, I’d pick one up now. Does anyone know where they are still offering them at a discount?
Here’s a little funny note about the VL2.
When it was first demo’d there were some folks complaining on Modwiggler about the colored knobs. The Pittsburgh Modular folks replied somewhat tongue in cheek that they’d maybe offer a set of gray knobs for those who hate color. Well, it seems they’ve actually done that!
I got a chuckle out of the following line from the description:
Understand that by purchasing this and removing the color from your Voltage Lab 2, you have broken Richard’s heart.
Nice find
And I have to say that these knobs clash with the overall style of the device
You better be quick
I’m in the US. This looks like a British reseller.
Edit: I tried to buy it from them, but my order was frozen when I entered a US shipping address. Thanks for the head’s up though. I’ll definitely buy one if I can get one for $1,499.
I have always been curious about modular, but never really dipped my toes in. This seems like a kind of “forever synth” as in, it won’t be easy to begin with, but the flexibility and depth will have the capacity to keep me interested for a very long time.
