Trying to come to grips with the Toraiz arranger and the scenes I gave them another go (below). You can get a lot going on with the scenes.
Also, the nice part about the arranger is you can jump in and out of patterns and scenes while everything is running. Alternatively, as you go through your scenes and patterns, you can just drop them into the arranger without starting the arranger. You can just build up an arrangement.
Pioneer did a good job of implementing this set-up. You can also record into patterns as the arranger is playing…good stuff.

Sounds very good to my ears, could you explain a bit your workflow with the DJS ? Is this all prerecorded loops? What did you sample?* How is the volume automation done?

The first track is just drums and sampled FX, the second track has a drum loop and some sampled FX and drums.
I’m actually using the SP-16 and trying to figure out the best flow for using scenes and the arranger.
Starting with scene 1 and about 4-8 patterns. Then copying and building scenes 2,3,4 etc from there.
I’m finding the box is more flexible with 1 bar patterns but you end up with more scenes and patterns to manage.
A big break through for me today was learning to copy a bunch of patterns over in the same scene. Then go through and use the mute function to build a basic arrangement. The thing I learned is, once I have the mutes set up like I want, I then switch to track mode and delete what’s not playing. Major duh moment for me
You cannot do this on OT period --for example pitch control on i/c audio is discussed here—it cannot be done

ILL-GREEN I ordered my Pioneer DJS from USA. Can you tell me if has an external power supply(if thats the case it will be 100V-240V) or if not whether there is a voltage selector switch on back of unit

Could you comment on volume automation?
Does one have to use an external midi controller to do volume automation ? Or is the internal mixing screen sufficient?
The scenes is just a set of patterns playing at the same time? It keeps also the mute state?
You build your song with advancing scenes, then mute /unmute individual tracks? Could the mute behavior be influenced?
One Project with 16 Scenes does not sound much on paper, how interesting stays a scene in reality?
Yea no problem. There is no automation. But you can p-lock volume, FX sends, pitch, etc.
Each scene is like a new kit plus a brand new set of patterns. 16 scenes = 16 sounds + 16 patterns. On the SP, the mutes are saved per scene. On the DJS, they’re saved per pattern.
On the SP, I’m copying my first pattern to the other 15 pattern slots. Then I figure out what works best in terms of mutes, then delete the tracks that are muted. On the DJS, you can just them muted.
But the mutes kill the sound, FX tails, everything. And they’re not quantized if you want to mute live. Not very musical. That’s why I delete the track.
You can make a whole track with 4 patterns and some mutes. The scenes come in handy when you want to add different samples, try another arrangement, or go in another direction.
Each track has its own pattern ? So a scene is a song, and i can have 16 songs in my projects. With enough variation done in a scene, a set /project could be 2hours long ?
Oh yea. You should have enough variation with samples and scenes for a long set

The AC power is internal. It just comes with a 3 prong cord that you plug in the back. No voltage selector.
Not sure if the AC power converts the voltage internally. With my MV8800 I can use it in any country, just as long I use the proper cords and prongs for that country. This might be the same deal but gotta check the manual.
“256 samples across the scenes” is that 256 each scene or do all 16 scenes share the 256 samples?
16 tracks each with one sample x 16 patterns = 256 samples so I hope it is 256 per scene.
You only have 16 pads. So each scene can only have 16 samples. But you get 16 scenes. 16x16
It’s easy to go between scenes.

For me - the DJS wins. The Toraiz is great but inspiring for me. Something about the DJS just works.
I have no idea what this sounds like, but it sure was fun to jam out. Plus, I did some resampling, which was easy with the DJS.

MPC-X or DJS-1000?
MPC is going to be way deeper and have a more traditional sequencing style. DJS is more performance oriented.
I can’t sequence in the traditional sense. Or I don’t like to. I prefer to perform things on the fly, so…
DJS doesn’t have an arranger and you can’t chain patterns. Yet.
