Like all insurance Pet Insurance is a gamble and I’ve come unstuck recently.
As a puppy my dog has a mild ear problem and a short-lived joint injury. I paid the vet fees in both cases as it wasn’t worth the hassle to claim.
Roll forward 2 years and I was looking to change insurer due to increasing annual renewals and when I enquired I was told that even though I made no claim the two very common and low cost injuries were now considered ‘existing conditions’ and wouldn’t be covered on any new policy. So I’ve stayed with my original insurer to retain full cover for any condition and have to suck up the annual increases.
In 4 years my cover has gone from £17 a month to £47 and increasing annually.
I’d suggest going on best cover and best reputation and just expecting the cost to rise. Once our dog gets to 9 years old I expect to be paying over £120 per month and also expected to pay an additional contribution to any treatment.
