My favorite delay is the EQD Avalanche Run. Simple but complex, sounds great.
I bought mine in the UK for around £745
It interrupts your audio stream randomly with pithy observations on your character
“Call that a filter sweep?! I could do better with my hands tied behind my back!”
I had the Benidub Echo for a short time. Sounds lovely but I ended up getting the Echosystem for more versatility and midi control.
I tried the Boss Space Echo recreations recently in the Roland store, both the smaller RE-2 and the slightly bigger but much smaller than I thought RE-202. Super impressed with both, really quick hands on and easy to sculpt sounds. I have an original Space Echo RE-201 and although different, it felt of the same world. Definitely worth checking out, solid boxes, good price.
Strymon El Cap gets a lot of studio mileage for me and can be clearish or grackled to heck. I particularly like that it’s tap tempo because it’s super nice to have your delays sort of close but not perfect in terms of timing.
I just picked another one up as a present for a friend but I’m actually considering just keeping it so I’ve got 2.
I’ve had a Boss RE-20 since they first came out but I just find it kinda boring and lacking the immediate magic of ElCap
Echosystem into Ventris reverb
I really like my polymoon and am looking to upgrade it to the lvx. It doesn’t do the traditional tape dub thing exactly but the phaser and flanger and the ability to morph into a reverb are all great for dubby techno. It also has algorithms for doing trippy pitch stuff on the taps. The sound is more future than past so it depends on what your goal is.
I concur on the El Capistan. I’ve got two v1’s and love them. Interface means a lot and I really get along with the feel of the whole thing.
Hello, I am also looking for a delay for Dub Techno. The market is huge and I am thinking about the elektron Heat FX, the microcosm hologram or the
Empress Echosystem. All three offer more than just reverb and delay.
Has anyone had experience with any of the three?
Is the delay of the Analogue Heat FX the same as in the other Elektron devices?
So did you get a Benidub?
The Eventide H9 has a few really great delay patches. Including analog tape delay simulation. But what really makes it shine is that there are patches like Band Delays or Crystals which combine delay with pitch, reverb, modulation etc.
It also can sync via MIDI clock or tap-tempo via a momentary footswitch OR the control app. Downside is how much of a pain it is to modify a patch without the app.
I really like the Universal Audio Galaxy 74 and Starlight, both great pedals for some dubby vibes. Check out Limbic Bits on youtube for some great videos on all kinds of pedals and synths.
Jomox T-Resonator
Just found this thread. I’ve owned the Timeline and currently own the Volante. When I realized that I was using the Tape setting on the Timeline 90% of the time I decided to change to the Volante, which gives me all of the controls on the surface without any menu diving. It also gives immediate control of 4 different tap divisions, any of which you can turn on/off at any time. Finally, the spring reverb on the Volante sounds great, better than the one on my Empress Reverb. Highly recommended for deep, dubby techno.
The Moisturiser is fantastic for everything. Got an insane drive on it as well as all the wobbly wibbly goodness.
What are the mods you’ve got on the front of yours? Very jealous you’ve got switches on it that I havent…
Mod options are described here:
http://www.knasmusic.com/products/moisturizer/modifications.php
KNAS can do them for you when ordered or after the fact, not sure if there’s a lead time if one sends it in or not. But the switch to change the order of reverb and filter is a big one, worth it just to have that option available.
