I got a Analog Mixer for sale on ebay classified, the German version, and I´m dealing with a guy.
We met on a price for the mixer that we´re both happy with but as I asked about the shipping he´s telling me that he lives in China. first of all, I don´t have any reason to distrust this guy, but it was a surprise that he wasn´t living in Germnay or the EU.
He transfer me the amount for the Mixer and the shipping but I was left with the fees which we didn´t aregee on.
I told him that I´m not a shop or professional seller, it´s a private sale, so there´s not return or refund if he´s not happy with the product so he better use the ff option. I told him that he need to reply to that or else I would refund his money and the deal is off.
I only bought and sold hardware through PP with the ff option and as a buyer I trusted the sellers as a seller buyers have been trusting me.
I´m still waiting on he´s reply but I was thinking if any of you would care to write your opinions if this is a deal to stay away from or any experiences with deals with in this scenario. Could/should I have done it better or differently or what´s your 2 cents?
Thanks
Had some people that didn’t want to use ff as they thought it would be more secure for them to get their money back in case sth is wrong. (I don’t think it’s that easy). I personally don’t like to deal with colleagues from other continents because of the potential hassle.
On top I have read about people being ripped of by using PayPal. Cannot confirm this myself. Maybe you wait for the reply and then decide. If you got a bad feeling better step back imo.
If he’s paid with fees then that protects him (and you) but would leave him with the option to say “nah, forget I don’t want this any more” and get a refund for some made up reasons (it came with damage, it is not as described, etc). From experience, Paypal is pretty easy to deal with in this regard.
On the flip side, you would also be protected should the mixer “magically” go missing en route to China or some how turn up damaged.
Personally, you’re already doubting this one which says it all to me and I’d walk away.
Cancel the transaction if he’s not going to use ff. Also only ever send to the PayPal address on record, otherwise PayPal will refund there money.paypal are without doubt the worst company ever to deal with
There´s a problem with PP ff option in China so he had to use the other option. He then wanted me to pay half of the fee and I wasn´t happy with that. So I send his money back and the deal was off. I think it was the right thing to do, too much hassle and already spend too much time on this deal.
PP friend/family option gives the buyer no protection at all. It’s basically a money transfer.
Standard PayPal protects the buyer against scams, so it should obviously be paid by the buyer.
I have made many deals in the past : I usually offers the port but not always. The buyer always pays for PP fees, though.
I send the object after I received the money, and I make sure I take as many pictures of the object + the package before sending it.
I would have to disagree.paypal are nothing but money laundering thieves. No other company in the world can keep your money for 6 months even if the buyer paid with a stolen credit card,it’s still down to the seller to prove you didn’t know.they will keep all your funds for 6 months.they have destroyed loads of small eBay business with there bullshit ways
My PSN account was hacked a few years back. Some chump bought a copy of FIFA Ultimate for £70. I immediately contacted both Sony and PayPal. The latter issued an immediate refund but Sony then responded by freezing my account.
Despite numerous complaints/calls/explanations, my only option if I wanted to keep my account (and previously bought content) was to pay Sony the bill. They refused to even acknowledge I had been hacked despite confirming that no machine I own was used to buy the game, download it, or play it. They even conceded that it was some machine on ianother continent that bought it!
Anyway, when researching I discovered this was a very common scenario PSN users found themselves in. So, I now only ever use prepaid cards on PSN. Not worth the risk.
I’m missing out lots of heated call details. It’ll only put me in a mood
That’s definitely a bad experience you had. I guess they were not prepared for such scenarios and could not handle it (which is btw unbelievable in our times as hacking is getting quite common). But aside that I never had problems with their service on consumer products, but that’s something they may have better under control.
About Paypal to be on topic. For me it is confusing to pay the paypal fees aside from the more confusing conversion rates. You agree with a seller on a payment, but need to include the fees depending on location / currency. The intransparancy while paying via Paypal is pretty annoying (and I guess in their favour).
In my country local laws and regulations do not allow F&F option on PayPal, so it is not really up to me or PayPal, I just have to treat everything as payment for goods or services.
Most of the time I either pay all the fees or we split them, but sometimes I do encounter people who are not willing to go that way (again they could be tracked from their gov side to check if the perform unauthorized business, not only personal sale and sometimes they just think I will create problems with refunding the money). On the other hand if you take enough pics, and track everything through PayPal, send to PayPal official address and enter tracking number there with all the pics, they cannot claim back money that easily. The only problem left is fees, which are still much lower then wire transfer between countries, especially when it comes to sending money from non-EU to EU
I personnaly always use paypal to buy and sell stuffs.
Never had a single problem and I made mores than 100 transactions on the past 2 years.
I always use trade and goods when buying expensive items.
When selling I always make a clear descriptive invoice mentionning all details of what is sold.
I send all my stuffs tracked, insured, proof of delivery and mention a phone number on the package.
I update the paypal status with the tracking number. That way we are both covered.
When I read about this lost MnM package, or this Cwejman filter that never been sent I wonder why these 3% fees are so impossible to afford for some…
I try to sell exclusively in euros though as exchange rates are a steal with paypal…
My2c.
As an aside, check out TransferWise for both wire transfers between countries and also mluti-currency debit card / currency accounts. They give you the realtime and actual exchange rate (unlike PayPal and many banks) and their transfer fees are far lower than the banks’. They’re also completely legit. No buyer protection for wire transfers though, so it’s much like F&F but far less of a ripoff on the exchange rate.
Anyone else in the EU have problems with Paypal lately due to the changed EU regulation?
The use of my account has been ”limited” for months although I’ve submitted all the info and ”paperwork” the site asks. Still says ”processing confirmation” and when I click ”solve problem” it takes me to my profile where it says my name, birthdate and nationality, all of which are correct.
I would just kinda want to be able to use my money I got for selling some synths internationally. Would spend it on more synths, natch!
Edit: I wouldn’t say this lightly but the customer support and all that with Paypal seem to be a complete joke.
I had my account being put „on pause“ after I started selling records on Discogs and reached a certain income limit which requiered PayPal to ask for confirmation of my account details. Tried it online and got stuck in a loop (sounds similar to what you‘re describing) so I called and it got solved right away… well right away after being on hold on the phone for quite some time.
If I‘m not mistaken their EU headquarters are in Luxembourg so no need for an overseas call. IIRC it‘s a one price per call number so there shouldnˋt be any high fees either. You‘ll just need patience
