Oxi One Sequencer pairing

Hi all,
Im contemplating the next step in my setup. Right now Ive got a Digitakt and a Minilogue Xd.
However, im thinking about getting a Oxi One as my main sequencer but im concerned that its a bit of a overkill because the Oxi One is a hardcore sequencer but the DT also has a great sequencer.

I could use it as a drumachine and sampler but still thinking its a overkill and I should get a TR8s instead of the DT and get a Oxi One.
Curious about your thoughts!

Just consider what you need and like and what your workflow is or shall become…

I got the OXI one because:

it’s a matrix sequencer, quick access to many functions and visiblity of notes and parameters directly step by step
it supports CV
it’s also a “keyboard” including “chord-mode”
great editing features, also quick to handle

That’s not saying anything negative about Elektron sequencers. I have a couple of them and love them. Some functionality of the Elektrons could have been inspiration for the OXI designers

Both are very complex but capable as well. I would say, both are overkill for what you seek or both are not

I don’t think anyone else can tell you which you’ll prefer, as it’s all about what you are trying to achieve, and how you like to work.

The thing with the Elektron sequencer is that you can parameter lock far more with it than anything you can do with an external sequencer.

But to me, using it feels like a very rigid way of “programming” in a track.

I love the modulation options available once you have a pattern built up, but I don’t like the process of getting to that point.
I know there are many people here that start with a pattern/melody in their head and can punch that into the sequencer in only a few moments though.

I have a Torso T1, rather than an Oxi One, and it’s so much quicker/easier for me to make progress on a track with that than the Elektron sequencer.

I like it a lot more when it comes to sequencing melodic parts.
But you always have the option of working out your pattern on it, and then recording it in if you aren’t wanting to manipulate it live. That way you can still take advantage of plocks on the Elektron sequencer.

I have a TR-6S as well, rather than a TR-8S, and it’s a very different thing from the Digitakt.

If you want Roland Drums, you can’t do much better. It sounds great thanks to ACB.
But I don’t find it very flexible beyond that. Sure, it does technically have sample playback and sound editing, but I don’t find it to be especially good for either. It’s very menu-divey.

Granted the 8S has a lot more hands-on controls, and eleven tracks vs eight on the DT or six on the 6S.
But for me, its main use is as a ‘sound module’ for when I want Roland drums. That’s part of the reason I went with the much smaller 6S over the 8S.

As a sampler, the Digitakt has so many more possibilities beyond drums.
And while samples are missing something vs ACB or synthesized drums, there’s nothing stopping you from loading up a DT with 808/909 samples etc.
DT has a lot of possibilities to breathe life into them.

And depending on where you plan on taking things in the future, I don’t think there is anything wrong with having both the Oxi One for sequencing and the Digitakt.

There’s nothing to say you are only allowed one powerful sequencer in your setup (something the TR-6S/8S certainly does not have).

It may benefit you to pick one sequencer (Oxi) and focus all your efforts on that.
But further down the line, you may find that you want to revisit the Elektron sequencer, have the DT sequencing other gear, or use it for performance control with MIDI CCs mapped out - even if you have an Oxi One sequencing the DT.

IMO, there’s nothing better than controlling a Digitakt than a Digitakt.

I think oxi one serves better at sequencing multiple poly synths/drum machines because of all the playability it offers with the chords, drum generator, poly arps, pattern generator, mod lanes etc. it really shines at condensing a larger setup into a more manageable workflow to focus on.

But just two mono synths? Yeah that’s a bit overkill, I would say.

I have and use both in my setup. Oxi One for sequencing my synths (Iridium, Virus Ti, Sub37, Peak) and Digitakt for sequencing samples and also controlling occasionally my pedals in live recording situation. I think its a win-win scenario for me.
I love both devices and use them differently, but together they are a powerful combo.

Thanks for the extensive response.
I really like the DT and all the possibilities it brings but sometimes I would like to have a quick drum sequence set up so I can just experiment with the keys on the XD.
Do you use the DT most of the time for drums?

Im really contemplating if I just want to let go of the DT and buy a somewhat “normal” drummachine so I can focus more on the synth part because in the future I would like to be more focused on the synth part of producing instead spending to much time setting up the drums on a DT

Or do you also use keys on the synths a lot?

The oxi one is great at sequencing drums on Digitakt, you could generate a quick sequence then record it into the Digitakt then have plocks. It works well for me that way, and then the randomized velocity,octave, retrigs make it more dynamic and generative as well. So many possibilities. You can’t go wrong with oxi one!

Yeah, I get it. When you have infinite possibilities with samples, it’s easy to get lost in trying to find exactly the right sound, or spend too much time tweaking/resampling a sound rather than focusing on making music.
I’m very guilty of this.

I’d suggest either sticking to one of the factory kits, a sample pack, or creating a selection and sticking with it.
There are even some free Roland packs out there: Free | Samples From Mars

With those decisions taken away, you can focus on using it as a drum machine rather than a “sampler.”

I am using the keyboard of my Virus Ti to record into Oxi, because I prefer real keys to input notes. However, the Chord Sequencer is very helpful, so I often use it to quickly try chords with the selector and record them, as it just copies it and puts it into the sequence.

Just here to say that I’m having a blast using an Oxi One to sequence a Digitone II

I do kind of an hybrid sequencing for live improvisation.

Track 1-12 internally sequenced for Drums / Percs / FX / Glitch
Track 13-16 sequenced by one Oxi track in Matriceal or Multi mode

And still having three Oxi tracks for sequencing my modular that been feeding the audio ins of the Digitone

I’ve been experimenting with pairing both sequencers the past weeks, using the internal Elektrons as complex modulation with p-locks on a different length than the gates/notes from the Oxi One, it becomes a polymeter modulation on top of the melodies/rhythms from the Oxi.
