OXI One overkill for only VST sequencing?

i don’t own any hardware synths, only VST - however in missing the hands on sequencing a bit, would it be overkill to buy an oxi for only vst sequencing?

I don’t have/haven’t used an OXI but I have a Hapax, I wish I had bought it sooner, it makes sequencing so much more pleasurable, regardless of what you’re actually sequencing. I think it can be worthwhile to have an external sequencer no matter what.

Not overkill at all. If you think of your 8 VSTs as 8 unique synths/drum machines then you’re ready to go.

I personally dislike sequencing with a mouse on a piano roll. Using hardware sequencers makes a huge difference and brings a perfect blend of DAW & DAWless.

I don’t think so. Check out Frederico/Oora’s past videos with the Oxi One. Many times he uses it to sequence his hardware. But sometimes he’ll use it just to sequence Ableton plug-ins alone. If you go to the Oxi website, it looks like they’re encouraging people to use it as a sequencer for their DAWs and VSTs.

It’s not overkill. And the Oxi One MK2 is coming soon, so this is a great time to buy a used MK1.

I would play a devils advocate and say “think about it” since oxi one is hyped now on this forum.
If you have elektron gear you can use their sequencer, or some cheaper midi controllers.
Think if it makes sense and if you actually gonna use it and for what exactly. If things that oxi one is offering are overkill for what you are sequencing that it might be a overkill and 1000 euros down the drain.
After watching oora video for oxi one, i just fired up diva with stepic vst, and got same results, just with mouse and one midi controller.
Still you can buy it, try it, and if you don’t like it sell it again.

this.

Just give it a little bit of time, continue making music, and if you still see that hands on sequencer is gonna improve your workflow then go for it.

I got the Oxi One specifically to control VSTs - I don’t like using the Ableton Push but craved a way to sequence tracks. in a meaningful way. It’s been worth every penny in that regard. The fact it also works as a bus-powered, internally battery-charged sequencer for my Maschine+ and Virus is the icing on the cake. I enjoyed using it to sequence the odd semi-modular in my collection too like the DFAM and Quadrantid Swarm, as they become so much more flexible and powerful with a little help.

Actually I would say it depends on which version they’re looking for. This is probably the ideal time to buy a mk 1, but if it’s the new one then yeah I’d say it’s probably hyped right now.
I used Stepic for a while but I find it way more awkward to use than my Hapax, especially with Ableton’s midi routing, but YMMV.

well…theres people who paid 2500$ US for a cirklon to sequence an ipad…

Its great with VSTs - I kind of mix and match and do VSTs plus midi and CV at the same time also.

Nice to chuck it in front of Bitwig / Live 12 with no cables also to jam with software only

actually a neat idea!

just the pricetag of 900 money units… a bit hefty.

Second hand Oxi One MK1 units are going for £400 or so at the moment here in the UK. Worth every penny. So well built and incredibly flexible.

I really do feel like an Oxi rep sometimes, but I swear I’m just a dude who got lucky with a Kickstarter and have been blown away.

IMO it would be a kind of overkill, if there is nothing special for your usecase that OXI ONE has and Ableton Live or Bitwig has not.

If you are “missing hands on sequencing”, I don’t think that any sequencer will be a help to overcome this. A sequencer is only a tool to support us writing tracks - like a pencil - not how to write tracks or how to be creative.

If you are preferring pushing real buttons rather than clicking with a mouse on a display, well, OXI might be more fun and more physical - if that makes sense.

If not, check out options, which are more affordable first and practice sequencing.

Just my opinion: I use my OXI One for my hardware synths, because I wanted a complex and versatile sequencer solution working completely OTB. OXI One supports keyboard functionality, but if I want to record notes I prefer a real keyboard like Arturia Keystep etc. Another selling point for me was the eight channels of CV for Eurorack and it’s quite small footprint and mobility

wdym lucky with a kickstarter?

I thought the mk2 was way better?? I only skipped through Oora’s video… I’m confused a bit. He also kinda said it’s “his baby”

Oora and another musician had some influence in creation of mk2

I mean a lot of crowd-funded projects end up badly - either the product isn’t great or the project fails and leaves people out of pocket. I saw what Manu was doing at Oxi when they announced the original One and took the risk. The result was a piece of gear I’ve used every time I’ve made music on hardware or software in my studio for years now.

Sooo when I buy old mk1 I won’t be as happy as wenn buying new mk2 for more than double.

This is Teenage Engineering grade price policy! Well done haha pushes all the buttons in me … buy old outdated for 400 or the latest and greatest new for 900 🫶🏻

Maybe it’s underkill?
