Oxi Instruments E16 MIDI-Controller

Very good point!

Creator of Timepod here

Resolution is determined by hardware, and given that they’ve not mentioned the specs of the encoders, one can assume they use standard 128-step per revolution encoders.

Timepod’s 1024-step per revolution pots allow for proper high resolution control with 14-bit CCs, which is natively supported in most major DAWs. Plenty of gear also support 14-bit CCs.

Even for controlling 7-bit parameters, 128-step encoders require twisting your elbows for a full 360 revolution to go from min to max. That, or using software acceleration to ā€œsimulateā€ higher resolution but resulting in pointer drift (i.e. inaccurate pointer positions from fast movements).

It’s interesting that they copied our product, but I take it as a compliment. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

So clever of Oxi to make the shift button the O in their logo

This 4X4 controller war could very well end up as good promotion for you ^^

Joking aside, it’s always nice to have different flavours of somewhat similar products

Indeed. They have a stronger brand and know how to market their products well. But I think once people get the chance to try Timepod and E16 side-by-side, the market will determine the true winner.

I think this with the Lightreft Monolit u could controll the world….become a evil MIDI Master Overlord :imp:

That seems like a rather strong accusation given the fact that 4x4 controllers have been done by many already and the things you can do with midi are more on the obvious side. Doesn’t seem so difficult/unlikely to come up with similar concepts I’d say.

Has anybody got their hands on the manual of the E16?

So it’s a Oimepod

Seems like the only thing available at the moment is the Quick Start guide. Evey time I click the link for the manual it takes me to the Quick Start guide. I guess the manual is still a work in progress.

The last release of a proper 4x4 controller was over a decade ago (Twister or Faderfox EC4).

It would be a very unlikely coincidence for another company to release a 4x4 knob controller with endless encoders and LED rings plus a snapshot and morphing system, a year after a successful Kickstarter campaign of said product.

Yeah there’s a max hardware resolution. But if you start from 128 by default and can go up to 1024 that’s what I meant by ā€œaddingā€ resolution by software.

I loved the idea of your product, but without a screen, it doesn’t help performers like myself who are basically re-locating knobs of tons of things: multiple pedals on the floor, groove boxes on a stand, etc. I’m on stage. I need to see page after page, bank after bank what each knob does. Memorizing a robust setup without a screen for assistance is nearly impossible.

I’m working on an update for our desktop app that will allow you to label knobs, snapshots, and banks, synced with bank changes on the connected Timepod.

Looks like E16’s screen can only show 4 characters per parameter.

Time for a Timepod 2. Let the screen size/resolution war begin.

It was trivial for OXI to implement the E16 after the OXI One.
The Timepod doesn’t have a screen, so an immediate ā€œimprovementā€ could be made. Not sure the Timepod is aluminium or not, but that is also standard OXI trade dress. Timepod has buttons though, which could be advantageous for muscle memory.
Two products coming to the market at the same time means proper competition, which is good for users. Let’s see if Timepod does recording soon

Yours isn’t on-device though, right? Has to be connected to a computer to read those labels?

Okay. I ordered the E16 with the detent option.

I’ve been a long-time Faderfox EC4 user, and what kicked me over on this one is the ability to record motion, and hopefully the snapshot feature will be solid. EC4 does a snapshot, and it’s become a key thing for me, but it had no recording feature of movement. On-the-fly modulation ideas are exciting for me!

Thanks for the comparison. I was curious about the differences beyond the LED rings and price. I can live without those mentioned E16 features over the EC4 for now.

The biggest drawback for me is that the E16 has no midi learn function like the EC4. That alone is keeping me away.
