I figured out a solution to avoid the messed up Overbridge & Analog Rytm Update.
My System:
MacOS: Apple M1 Max, 64 GB, SSD 1tb, (Sonoma)
So I downgraded the OS Version of my Rytm MK2 to 1.61 again and did so with the Overbridge Version. And oh wonder… the audio drop outs disappeared. So at least I can work again in the studio for now.
The Rytm OS I still had on my mac, but im sure you can find it somewhere online.
I hope it works for you too.
I answered Elektron and described my solution to the problem. In my view it is a clearly messed up Update they provided (might be only for the M1 Pro & Max Chip).
I’ve spent countless hours troubleshooting on my M1 Pro and nothing works, including 2.3.9.
I’ve killed all non-Apple Silicon processes, bought a different cable going straight to the computer, tried different sample rates, buffer sizes, you name it. Even after all that testing, I can’t even say that one thing works better than another.
I’ve settled on using song mode and tracking into Ableton at 33 samples at 44.1 KHz, since sample rate doesn’t seem to matter. I track each song twice, line up the two takes of each part, and listen back for glitches, patching in the non-glitched tracks at trouble spots.
It’s a monumental pain in the ass but I’m managing to finish songs.
I have zero problems with audio outside of Overbridge, as a full-time mixing and mastering engineer.
I have been having the same issue with the Macbook Pro M1 Max on Ventura 13.6.2. I tried all different methods of troubleshooting the issue. Been trying to remedy this for over a week now.
I decided to downgrade from the newest OB update 2.7 to what @CreepBeat suggested OB 2.3.9.
I am still testing longer recordings but I have yet to have a dropout recording all tracks from my Digitakt and Syntakt. I have notifications on and browser and other programs which would cause a dropout on OB 2.7 but it seems to all be ok with OB 2.3.9.
Crossing my fingers that this remains the same for my hour long live jams.
want to add my kopeck too.
the latest version of sonoma and OB 2.7.3 on my m1 pro macbook—constant clicks and pops on AH1 and/or DT just playing spotify or watching youtube. the same crackles in ableton. seems it really depends on the parallel processes mac os has on background—eg. scrolling safari makes the problem even worse.
as some enauts mentioned before, OB 2.3.9 indeed works this noise better, but sometimes some of clicks still pop)
This is 100% EXACTLY what’s going on. You’ve really summed up the problem well here.
However, you mention the legacy kext drivers work flawlessly.
I also have an RME interface, the UFX III
I’ve actually found drop outs are occuring even with the kext drivers (I’m on an M1 Pro with Ventura running)
They do seem to occur less frequently than with the driver kit ones I’ve tested, but they’re still pretty regular and driving me batshit crazy. The dropouts happen even just using regular desktop sound in the desktop with Spotify or YouTube sound with no DAW running.
I just wanted to point this out.
If you’ve managed to get the Kext driver working with no dropouts, I’d be really interested how you managed it.
I’ve read that Sonoma solves the issue for some, but not for others.
I have UFX II which might be a bit different. I am on Ventura still.
I run at 48 kHz with a 64 sample buffer. No dropouts.
Things you should look into:
don’t run Rosetta software
look at CPU activity, maybe you have a hogging process there
connect the interface directly to the laptop to see if it’s better, some hubs are just bad at maintaining throughput over time (for instance, they overheat which causes issues)
disable wifi and see if this helps, if so look into whether there are too many other wifi networks interfering; or if you have some weird network-related activity spikes
disable Bluetooth and see if it helps, if so look into which device is causing it (if there are too many wifi networks around, this also affects Bluetooth because it runs on 2.4GHz)
launch Console.app and look for errors that appear around the time you get a dropout
To be clear, for me Bluetooth and Wifi don’t cause issues but this is after some work I did on switching the home to 5GHz and – where applicable – to cable Ethernet.
I disable all shit that runs at startup that I don’t want like Teams, OneDrive, Dropbox, Google Updater, and so on, and so on. I only launch backups manually, instead of automatically. Those things love to run at the worst moment.
One thing that is still a problem for me is high-priority Bluetooth messaging like when you unlock your computer with the Watch. This is sometimes a dropout. Same on the iPhone actually. But this is only when unlocking so I let it go.
2.3.9 works fine for me. Every now and again when Electron release new version of overbridge I’ll try it but it always brings the glitches back. It’s not a crisis for me as 2.3.9 is compatible with my devices but hope it gets resolves before they release a new firmware for a box I own as that will be super annoying to have to forego it due to this issue.
Yo I have the same issue with my 2021 MacBook Pro M1! I was going crazy trying to find solutions, in the end I got an Anker USB-C Data Hub to minimise the amout of pops by reducing the number of USB-C adapters and not use the same port that the external display is using.
This helped reduce audio glitches/pops but they still happen, just less often. Just enough to multi track ST DT DN for 4 bar loop most of the time. Very frustrating.
Maybe it’s time already to trade up to an M2 or M3.
Same issue here (M1 Pro), tried the newest firmware and 2.3.9. On the latter the only thing that works without the clicks and pops is the standalone App.
I have recently upgraded Traktor Pro 3.10 and finally installed onto my 14" M1 Pro 10 core 16. Unable to stop the split second drop outs (using a Traktor S5) even after all the NI forum suggestions. So it’s not only Overbridge for me. I also have a work dedicated M2 16" which I might try both on just to compare.
AT least my unbreakable 2015 mbp retina (Traktor 2.11) still runs like a champ still with anything audio, including Overbridge.
For those having clicks and pops using OB on an M1, I highly recommend you put in a support ticket with Elektron. They have a fix which I have tested for them successfully on my M1 Pro Max. I cannot give you this new version of OB - again, put in a support ticket. They likely would like some more people with an M1 to also confirm the fix as well before release.
Overbridge 2.7.6 fixes things for me, too. In two consecutive days of testing, I only noticed two buffer underruns, which is a huge improvement over the previous situation where it crackled every minute or two.
I just bought an ARmk2. I immediately upgraded the OS to 1.7 after all the positivity on Youtube etc… aaannnnddd I am having all the problems listed above. I am new to Elektron, and have fallen madly in love, but this is a very bitter pill to swallow. I hope there is a fix soon.
