Overbridge & Apple Silicon Audio Glitch (M1 Pro vs M3 Max)

Worth a shot to try a previous version but they don’t appear to be available on the Elektron site. Where can I download 2.3.9?

After gasping at what it would cost me to update my MacBook Pro, I think that’s really my last option to try. I can’t afford the $3500 it would cost me to upgrade to an equivalent M3 and so without being able to record my Elektron boxes, they are worthless to me and would have to sell them unfortunately.

I don’t have any issues using other interfaces on M1, so think it’s either an Overbridge or macOS Sonoma problem.

Me either…

I found a thread on here with links to older versions. As a last-ditch effort, I’ll give 2.3.9 a try and report back.

UPDATE: After uninstalling the old version and then installing 2.3.9 and rebooting, IT IS FIXED. Was able to record both boxes simultanously for 5 minutes via the stand alone apps as well as in Live 11 crackle free. Yay!!! Thanks all for the suggestion to roll back to an older version. :raised_hands:

Personal conclusion and 3 take aways after spending at least 20h on this topic over 4 days.

  1. not all M1’s have the same issue (there seams to be a difference between M1, M1 Pro and M1 MAX)
  2. my M1 Pro setup with a fresh and clean installation of SONOMA 14.1.1 and no other software installed has the crackling with my RME Fireface UCX II. This seams to be not an Elektron issue!!
  3. I have tested the setup on my M3 Max (work) and everything works flawless (Overbridge and RME don’t miss a beat and no crackling)

I have decided to trade in my M1 Pro with Apple for $1,055 and get the M3 Pro. When you buy a new MacBook now you will have until January 8, 2024 to return it for a full refund according to their Holiday Returns Policy here in the US.

This will give me enough time to test every combination of Overbridge and RME with my setup. If I hear a single crackle I will return it and buy a tape machine!!

And you were thinking of fixing it by buying a $3500 laptop… I hope Elektron sort this out quickly. :upside_down_face:

Shista - We posted this at the same time.

As mentioned I get the crackling with the latest drivers and firmware with my RME Fireface UCX II - on both Ventura and Sonoma OS.

If I run the RME Fireface and Overbridge on the M3 Max MacBook on Sonoma - no issues!

I am struggling to understand how you reached the conclusion that the issue is on your side. A fresh installation doesn’t guarantee you anything if you are using the same buggy software. I never had crackling issues with Overbridge on my M1 Pro before updating to 2.7.

Shista - I hear you. It is a complex thing and there might be many sources. I am happy for you that you don’t have the issue or you have the option to roll back pre 2.7 overbridge, but for me I have exhausted my options and spent enough time on this. Remember I use Overbridge 2.7 on the M3 Max (work) computer without any issues. Also the RME has crackling as well after a wiping out the MacBook and reinstall Sonoma and no other software except REM driver and firmware.

I think you misunderstood. I do have the issue now, but before I didn’t. And no, I don’t have the option to roll back due to the Rytm now on 1.70.

But you do you. If you need to spend that amount of money, rather than wait for Elektron to come out with a new version of Overbridge, who am I to get in your way.

Shista - this link will get you Overbridge 2.1.5.4

Maybe you get a link for previous 1.7 Rytm firmware and can get it to work.

I have the M1 Max 16” MacBook Pro, Sonoma, and use a MOTU AVB Ultralite (at home, a MOTU 8M at the studio space) for further info. So so happy the DT and ST are crackle-free now with the OB 2.3.9 rollback. I’m quite fond of the little buggers and was at the end of my rope with the crackling issue.

Just thought I’d mention I have an M2 Pro Macbook Pro and I also get this issue.

After my own testing I’m not convinced its an Elektron problem and I think it could be something to do with how those MacBooks handle USB audio. Specifically the ‘Pro’ chip.

Messing around with my setup seems to fix it for a while but it always comes back.

Can you share the link?

To the thread with older versions of OB? If so, no problem:

Can change the link provided in that thread with the revision number you are looking for.

I’ve been having this issue with my Macbook Pro M1 Pro since i bought it.
From what I’ve read on Elektronauts and elsewhere it’s a problem with M1 Pro, Max and Ultra processors (but not regular M1).
As far as I can tell it an apple problem and not an Elektron problem as it happens with some other interfaces as well.
I’ve tried lots of things but the only thing i’ve found that makes it a little better is using a USB B to C cable directly into the laptop. It doesn’t fix it but it seems to now only happen every few minutes rather than every few seconds.
I’ve had to resort to going ‘old school’ and recording into an audio interface.

Ugh. Y’all are making me think I’m still going to have this issue… I’m away from the boxes for the rest of today but will definitely report back if the evil crackles return for me in the next few days.

Just noticed there was a minor Overbridge update in the last few days from 2.7.1 to 2.7.3, so reinstalled and haven’t had any glitching for the last hour or so.

There’s no release notes so not sure what changed, but will test some more with Rytm and Digitone and report back.

I have the same setup as you. I’ll be keen to hear if you or anyone else find anything.

This is odd. I have an M1 Macbook Pro. I have an RME. I have never ever had one issue with it. RME has been rock solid on my machine for 2 years now.

I just recorded my Digitakt into Overbridge standalone 2 weeks ago. It came out perfectly with no clicks or pops or issues.

My OS Is still Ventura, so I will stay with that for now. I also use the USB B to C cables now and no adapters. My MBP is 16 gigs of ram and the 16 inch screen. Does that even matter? Doubt it but I figured I’d share that detail.

can confirm that my mac studio m1 ultra, sonoma 14.1.1, OB 2.7.1, has zero crackling or other sound issues either with standalone apps or au/vst plugins in live.
also doesn’t matter if I route audio out from standalone to my audio interface (MOTU ULmk5) or mac headphones out.
