hello everyone…first time poster and all that. Just taken delivery of a new shiny analog rytm with which to upset my neighbourhood.
The main reason i wanted to move to this kind of system rather than maschine that i have been using for years is obviously sound, but also individual outs for (some not all) of the instruments…sure i could do that in maschine on all 16 channels but I couldnt get that sound out of the computer to process it very easily and basically as i record stuff live its just not intuitive to how i work really.
My idea is to take the feed from the four outputs into ableton through a card or desk and run some effects through them on the way through pedals and what not, but, id also like to use the on board effects f the rytm and its pretty sweet sounding compression. How is this possible?
I record the effect stuff on the master out only and then merge the individual channels back with the effects when doing final arrange? seems painful.
Can i still use compression is this per machine or instrument or does it compress all and only come out on the master?
I know Overbridge will help here when its our but i want to avoid that as im stuck to using VST effects again unless i route out of ableton and back in and that never feels right…if im stuck to effects in the compy then it feels no differen really to using maschine in some ways (although i know it will sound better) - especially if im using samples with it…
The FX, dist and comp all only affect what is being sent to the main outs. Stuff going to the ARs input only goes through the comp and the limiter DC offset. Check the manual.
But you can record the FX only from the master (edit)outputs by not routing the track to the (edit) master (The setting is under the global manual, but, yeah, might as well RTFM). Obviously not individually, though…unless you use mutes and record one-by-one.
Keep in mind that the outs are line level and will go in very “hot” to your pedals (unless they’re the kind of pedals which accept line-level.) To avoid distortion (maybe it’ll sound fine to you), you’ll have to reamp to bring them to instrument level.
Ok so - if i want to record the drums onto their own channels and use the AR effects, compression, etc…this is not really possible easily? Thats a real shame. I really wanted to use the individual outs to multitrack but i also want to use the effects etc without jumping through hoops.
Oh well, ill look for a way around it that suits how i work.
One thing you can do is record out from each individual track as well as the main output for effects. It’s just you’ll have a single separate effects track with a dry recording of each of the 8 tracks. This is supposedly what Overbridge for the MKii units will allow.
