Outboard effects/Pedals

What do you use? I just ordered am EHX Cathedral and might be picking up a Strymon Timeline as well.

I like the Boss Tera Echo:

I like the tc electronics tone print pedals because they are cheap and sound good. But also love my old boss dd-3 (digital delay), and ch-1 (chorus) pedals.

You can’t go wrong with strymon. I really want the el cap, mobius, and bluesky.

For some reason I never tried out the ehx stuff. Let us know how you like the cathedral as thats one I’ve thought about getting. Seems well liked by many.

Anselmi is a big fan of the EHX Cathedral – I think he’s even got some mods on his?

In any case, the Strymon stuff is unbelievable. The Timeline is the most gorgeous pedal I’ve ever heard, but I really liked it for it’s incredibly dreamy quality. The El Cap is no slouch either – quite a deep pedal packed into a small package…

I use in my current setup Moogerfoogers Cluster Flux, Analog Delay, Phaser, Control Processor (CP-251) and Multi-Pedal (MP-201). Not exclusively with Elektron machines but works a treat as a Send and Return on an analog mixing desk. I find many times I route into the Octatrack for that sweet Dark Reverb too. Octatrack’s Dark Reverb is so hellowing.

I ordered a Strymon Bluesky last year and on a whim decided to order the El Capistan as well, and now I don’t use the Bluesky but use the El Capistan on everything. Bluesky sounds wonderful, but between the Cap’s spring reverb and the Elektrons I feel I have reverb covered. These days I’m more into layering delays, and I love using the Capistan with my EHX Deluxe Memory Man, which is my favorite delay (the older big box version). I also use a Small Stone phaser and Boss BF-2 flanger, which are nice for some cheap analog modulation. FMR RNLA is as its name says, really nice, and I won’t talk about the Biscuit again. That’s pretty much everything I use aside from some fuzz pedals for bass and guitar.

Ive got two korg pandora px4’s
Really like them, a bit digital, very dirty with speaker simulation

It is hard to find better Ring Mod than the Moogerfooger MF-102.

My cathedral just arrived. It sounds amazing. Really warm sound. Part of me was worried it would pretty much be an outboard dark reverb but they sound quit different (both great in their own ways). It’s really good on basses for a little bit of room or plate.

Been looking at the new Zoom MS-70CDR.Looks like a pretty awesome pedal at an amazing price. Even has an ice delay somewhat like the strymon.

Nice sherman!

@polyslax you really should have that timeline going through a strymon bluesky, silly. or a bluesky through your timeline.

“HEEEYYY… you got peanut butter in my chocolate!”

Thats who it was! thnx PT…
Be interesting if he weighs in with those mods.

As a quick aside how do you guys actually run your outboard effects?
Does anybody have some kind of effects send set up?

Could depend. Are you more of a “all in one box” user or “plays nice with others” user. And what are u recording to?

At the moment I am still adjusting. I was all ableton until I got my OT but now I run everything through the OT and then just record the Main to ableton. Trying to find a happy middle ground. I’d like to try setting up an effects send in the OT but havent had much success. Might have to reintroduce my mixer (which I ditched when I got the OT)

Hey Polyslax, that Ring Mod and Biscuit would give a lot of dissonance. And liking that E Bow. Love making synth-like tones on mine with me bass guitar. :+1:

Yea thats what I do, I use a rack line mixer.
Maybe a DJ mixer? There was a cool redbull academy video on four tet’s live setup. He had a nice balance, was using ableton too. I think.

If your mixer is of good quality, no one is going to pickup on not going DI (Direct In). If your mixer supports an Aux Send and Aux Return use it. Two or more Aux sends would be preferable but not essential as you can daisy chain effects in the best sounding order. Experiment Nedavine. I’m constantly re-routing effects, listening to what sounds best for the project that is at hand. If thats using them on the front-end or all on the way out or a little on both, who cares as long as it gets the best results your minds ear is telling you.
