I’m going to omit the Analog Heat as I need a compressor and the +FX is just too expensive. I own a FMR RNC and an RNLA which I use on inserts on my A&H mixer, but I wondering whether the Boum could be a good move.
I’m thinking about the Oto Boum for use with my MPC Live 2 exclusively.
I have both the BOUM and AH. Used to have the RNLA. The BOUM can get much much dirtier and grimier than the RNLA. It’s less quick for changing compression settings. My vote is for the BOUM.
Sell the RNC, RNLA then save up for the AH+FX
That would be my number one advice.
I’ve had all of those things, and the AH+FX has it all in one box and it sounds terrific.
Plus you can use program changes to pull up presets for each track.
It’s absolutely magical.
The compressor bangs, and each dist machine has some kind of value.
Everything together makes for a great limiter.
I really appreciate the enthusiam. As it happens the RNLA and RNC are so useful to me as an insert compressor (RNLA) / mix out compressor (RNC) they will be be staying fore sure, but you do seem very convinced I should get an Analog Heat +FX.
I could afford it I guess, but I am uncertain its going to do much more than a good compressor and some accurate mastering.
I have been watching a few videos on the BOUM and I am slightly concerned about a few small things - the one knob compressor and the lack of headphone outputs which means another device for listening or I have to be in my studio listening through speakers.
Other than the AH +FX, I don’t know of any compressor with a separate headphone output. Not sure why you’d need one either. I certainly haven’t felt that was missing on the BOUM. Just plug the outputs of it into whatever you were going to plug the instrument outputs into and you’re good to go.
Yeah I’m not too sure what I’m doing really! The MPC is so portable I write anywhere with it, in the kitchen, in the van etc. I love portable electronics.
I suppose I’m trying to make a kitchen table / non studio based mastering solution… then take it into the studio after.
I’m also thinking about selling a load of stuff I don’t need anymore to have more desktop space in the studio… I’m just playing with some ideas
The distortion circuits mixed with the filter, LFOs, and EQ really give tracks umph you wouldn’t know was there otherwise. I feel like the compressor is just an elegant way to tame those things. The other FX are just icing on the cake.
When you really dive into the various envelops and how they can effect distortions, filters, and the compressor really put’s it in a league of it’s own.
It definitely is expensive.
I ended up selling a few pieces to justify getting one.
I think adding an end of chain compressor is going to make the MPC Live feel much less portable. I’d just play with the internal compressor options and find something that works for you.
The BOUM is great but for me it’s been a mostly set it and forget it device.
You might dig a Bugbrand Stereo Compress. I’ve had one on my octatrack for close to 10 years now. It really helps glue disparate samples together and sounds great. I would imagine it would work just as well with an mpc. I think Tom even has a couple in stock right now…
