I’m a little head-scratchy on getting other devices to send MIDI program changes to the OT. I’m working with Ableton Live.
I’ve got it hooked up with a USB MIDI interface.
Octatrack is receiving MIDI on all channels and program changes on auto channel (11). Live is sending a program change (bank 1, pattern 1, tried both sub bank on and off with no love), on channel 11. What am I missing here?
Also, is there a magic trick for transport control or does Live have to send a “start sequencer” cc message?
Last, I wrote to support but perhaps someone here knows: if I were to program program change commands into a pedal, is there a command for “next” or “previous” pattern? And what’s the MIDI nomenclature for that?
Regarding no love from OT at channel 11
I can´t see anything faulty with your setup as you described it, re-check project MIDI settings?
Regarding Start Sequencer from Live.
I don´t know, but IMHO, you should be able to setup Live to transmit Transport Control whenever you´re using it on Live. Then they would/should be in transport control sync. But if the question is more about being able to start Live while having OT patiently wait until it´ll get a (new/separate) Transport Control message (Play), then that´s a different thing. In the MIDI Control Reference section in the manual you are able to find which notes that the sequencer responds to.
Regarding Next/Previous pattern.
There isn´t normally an MIDI command for this itself, AFAIK. You would just need to find that you have the function implemented in the pedal itself. In MIDI communication, I guess this would just be seen as a serie of program change messages sent one after each other.
Basic functions within most foot controller is bank change + program change, often divided in banks of ten. Some units do have something they often refer to “direct control”, which is that you simply enter program change by pressing the digits.
Say for example 125 = 1 + 2 + 5 (+ “enter” in certain units).
Some units that are more advanced may have the function you need in a basic form or as a more advanced option (with several channels, CC# transmission etc), quite often called “song mode”. Many of them allows you then to step thru the “songs” in a serial manner in one way or another…
Thanks. I went back and forth with Cenk today. Obviously the OT can receive program changes. The question is what they should look like coming from a non-Elektron device.
The OT does not currently have previous and next pattern available as commands but it’s now in as a feature request.
When I get an answer on MIDI nomenclature, I will post.
No idea on Live. Will try again when not tired–it could also be an issue with the MIDI interface, I suppose, so I should test it with other gear,
