OT + MnM Midi Question

First off I don’t even think what I want to do is possible given my MIDI controller is an MS2000, but I’ll ask anyway!

So the MnM has six tracks, and by default these six tracks are fed information via midi channels 1-6. That’s cool. Also the “auto channel” (which is what I’ve been using) is channel 9, which is also fine. So I’ve been setting my MS2000 to transmit MIDI channel 9, and on my OT I set track 1 (and 2 and on) to transmit channel 9 to my MnM. This has worked fine, but of course if I come up with a bass part on track 1 of the MnM, and I want, say, a lead part on track 2, this means I have to mute MIDI track 1 on the OT so that it’s not sending signal to the whole MnM. Make sense so far?

Alright so then I’d like to have it set up so that MIDI track 1 on the OT sends MIDI channel 1, track 2 sends MIDI channel 2, etc. But it seems to me my MS2000 can only send one channel at a time, right? I can only tell it to be 1 OR 2 or 9, etc. I’ve noticed in my DAW I can tell my MIDI controller to send on all 16 channels at once, but I’m trying to avoid that whole thing. Is there any way around this?

Also when I tried making MIDI track 1 send MIDI channel 1 to the MnM, with my MS2000 being set to output MIDI channel 1, it didn’t seem to work? I could test that again. So far it seems the only one that does work for sure is MIDI channel 9, aka the “auto” channel.

Lastly while I’m at it, I might as well try and take my MIDI knowledge to the next level and use the OT for all it’s capable of. What is the easiest way to go about, say, sending an LFO to the filter of my currently selected MnM track? How do I find out what that CC value is (that is what it’s called, right?) and tell the OT to send that information on over?

OT audio tracks midi channels have to be different from midi tracks.
MIDI > CHANNELS

And yes, you have to choose in OT CTRL1 and CTRL2 setup pages the CCs corresponding to MnM parameters. Then use an lfo modulating CC1-CC10 dest.

This is not an optimal arrangement, in my opinion. You are using the auto channel feature on the wrong instrument. If I were you, I would try the following:

Connect MS2000 MIDI Out to OT MIDI In.
Connect OT MIDI Out to MM MIDI in.

Monomachine:
Use channels 1-6 as the individual track channels.
Do not use the auto track channel.

Octatrack:
Set the MIDI channel numbers to be 1-6 for the MIDI sequencer tracks 1-6.
Set the auto channel number to something different from the other channels, like 10.
Set the trig channel numbers for the audio tracks to OFF, at least temporarily.

MS2000:
Set the output MIDI channel number to match the auto channel number of the OT, for example 10.

So when you want to play the MM from the MS2000, select the MIDI sequencer track on the OT that corresponds to the MM track that you want to play.

Try this and report back.

Ah I see! I hadn’t considered that the Octatrack itself could have an auto channel. I assume this is in the midi settings in the project somewhere? I’ll try this when I get home and see how it goes.

I don’t get what you mean by setting the trigs for the audio channels to off. Why would I do that? Audio and midi are separate things right?

Not the actual track trigs, but turning the incoming MIDI channels off for the audio tracks, to avoid confusion.

How do I do this? I wasn’t even aware that audio tracks receive midi information? I’m so confused.

Anyway, I just tried setting it up as Peter suggested (leaving the OT auto channel as its default channel 11) and it’s working great. So that’s rad!

Of course the audio tracks can receive midi information, because otherwise these tracks wouldn’t be able to generate (or modify) sound from incoming midi messages.

Yes, it’s unusual. Default audio tracks channels are 1-8. Set them to off if you don’t midi control audio tracks or choose different channels.

Read all midi parts of the manual! (Project midi settings, The midi sequencer, Appendix C)

15.2 HOW MIDI IS ROUTED
If an audio track and a MIDI track share the same MIDI channel, the MIDI track will block the audio track from sending out data while the audio track will block the MIDI track from receiving data.

Project > Midi > Channels
