OT mk2 with Machinedrum mk2

Excuse the rookie question, but does anyone have an easy guide on how to use the MD as slave of the OT? I’ve looked at the global settings of both manuals but it’s not as straightforward as midi sequencing synths. Sounds from the MD are getting automatically triggered by the OT without sticking to the pattern playing.

Thanks in adavance

Sounds like you are sending midi notes/data; disable that in either the Octatracks [ Project | Midi Settings | Midi Audio Note Out ]; or disable that in the Machinedrums Midi Map [ Gloabal | Midi Map ]

Is that in Global/Control/Map Editor of the MD? I’m trying different things but the MD is doing is changing patterns on its own.

I don’t have a MD, but on the elektrons I have, each track has its own channel. You have to go into the global midi menu and turn them to off or another channel. Maybe look in the manual for global midi settings.

p59 Map Editor

thanks for that. How do you actually disable though?

Set all the [ Mapping ] to [ – ] … i.e. [ 0: — | 1: -C2 etc | 2: -C#2 etc ]

Still having a hard time. Any videos anyone can point me to? I found on how the OT controls the Digitakt but nothing on the settings needed on the MD. Once i connect the midi in into MD it no longer plays any patterns even after changing the Sync commands as described in the manual.
thanks again

Let’s do a checklist for having the two sequencers run in parallel.

Physical connections:
Connect the MIDI Out port of the OT to the MIDI In port of the MD using a working MIDI cable.

On the OT:
In the PROJECT > MIDI > SYNC menu, enable TRANSPORT SEND and CLOCK SEND.

On the MD:
In the GLOBAL > SYNC menu:

  • in the TEMPO IN sub-menu, set TEMPO SOURCE to “EXTERNAL”,
  • in the CTRL IN, set CTRL IN to “ON”.

This should work. Try it out and report back. If problems remain, let’s discuss them and sort them out.

Thanks for that! Really appreciate it.

It works when i plug the midi cable from the MD directly into the midi out of the OT but wasn’t working before because I was plugging it into the Quadra Thru. Does that make sense or am I missing something?

You didn’t even mention using a quadra thru. How can anybody say that’s what was wrong if you don’t say anything about using it or which ports you connected?

It should work if you connect the MIDI Out port of the OT to the MIDI In port of the quadru thru using a working MIDI cable, then connect one of the thru ports to the MIDI In port of the MD with another working cable.

Your Quadra Thru probably relies on drawing power from the MIDI Out port to which it’s connected, which is a clever but not reliable feature because not all devices can supply the necessary power over the MIDI connection. The MIDI Solutions website discusses this in detail: Frequently Asked Questions about MIDI Solutions Products

You may be able to put another device in the MIDI chain before the Quadra Thru and have it work properly, or resort to MIDI Solutions’ device: MIDI Solutions Power Adapter; Power Supply for MIDI Solutions Products

Otherwise you may need a different Thru box or a different MIDI configuration for your setup.

Good point but made the rookie mistake of assuming Elektron machines would react the same way as my other synths :joy: Thanks for the tip. I’ll try and report back.

Would a midi merger like this work with the quadra thru to be able to control MD along with other synths using through the OT?

The MIDI Solutions web pages are understandably a little cautious in their statements about what will work and what will not.

If you already have this MIDI merger, you can try it for yourself. If not, I would suggest that you ask MIDI Solutions themselves for advice based on your specific setup.

You haven’t told us any details of the rest of your MIDI setup so there may be better solutions for your OT-to-Quadra Thru-to-MD problem than buying a merger.

I emailed them thanks.

My set up is the OT controlling the MD for drum duties then want to add synths (mopho, nord lead 1, sh-32) to the midi channels of the OT for bass and lead. This was doable using the Quadra Thru when the MD wasn’t around.
Would appreciate any tips on how to configure/connect.

You have a few options to try without buying anything more.

Your MD has a MIDI Thru port and both the Mopho and SH-32 can have their MIDI Out ports set to work as MIDI Thru ports.

From your current setup as described you could simply feed the MD from the MIDI Thru of either the SH-32 or Mopho.

You could chain OT to MD to Mopho to SH-32 to Nord Lead and not necessarily need the Quadra Thru at all.

You could use one of the Mopho or SH-32 after the OT and connect the Quadra Thru after that, for example:

  • OT to Mopho to Quadra Thru;
  • Quadra Thru to MD;
  • Quadra Thru to SH-32.
  • Quadra Thru to Nord Lead.

Basically, probably no need for the Quadra Thru and almost certainly no need for an additional purchase.

Thank you thank you your tips worked without the Quadra Thru!
Bless this forum and its generous members.
