OT+MD+Korg+Ableton complex MIDI situation! With pictures

Heya guys! I wanted to ask you a few questions about how to set up my setup.

As you can see on this picture, there’s my setup:

And there I put a scheme if it’s difficult to understand how it works.

Dotted line shows how I usually use my MIDI wires. I’m using Korg Nanokontrol with Octatrack through Kenton MIDI USB Host. Octatrack also synced with Machinedrum.

So it’s only shows MIDI connection without audio cabling.

BLACK LINES on a picture shows you which MIDI connection I did today.

I wanted to use the whole setup with Ableton and I almost did a whole thing. But I cannot figure out how to make Ableton works also with Korg Nanokontrol.

Everything works but without Korg Nanokontrol.

I also have got that paired midi cable In stock.

Who’s your master clock? OT, MD, or Ableton?
I’m seeing some options which involve not using the Kenton and just plugging the Nano2 straight to the computer…

Ableton is master clock. When it works without PC master is Octatrack.

I’m using Nanokontrol as a pare for OT to make OT kinda like audio mixer.

I don’t use Ableton but there should be a way if you connect the Nano2 straight to the computer, to route the midi to the audio interface which goes back to the OT.
Kinda tired and scratching head about other connections, depends on if you use OT or MD midi sequencer, and what you want to sequence with it.
I don’t think you’ll get full bi directional midi between all the gear and be able to use all three sequencers without another piece of midi gear…
Couple setups possible though…
One would be OT out->Interface in, Interface out->OT in, and OT thru to MD in.
No MD midi sequencer with that config, but you could sequence Abes from OT, and MD or OT from Abe’s.
And like said above Nano2 into computer routed through Ableton to Interface would control OT.
:okej:

Edited because I tried to solve midi when I was tired…

“and OT out to MD in”

There is only three IN/OUT/THRU in OT

You meant “thru”?

Sorry, I’m tired, might need to get back to this…
I edited should be clearer.

I did all connection stuff as you said. Now I can use Nanokontrol as it were engeneered. But I wanted to use it with internal OT tracks, not Ableton tracks, you see?

That parts for someone else, there should be a way to route the midi from the nano to the OT through the computer using ableton, but I don’t use ableton so don’t know the method.
Probably something like “external instrument” or something… Possible in Logic and Mainstage, I would be surprised if Ableton can’t do this…

So we stucked there.

Any other answers?

It’s just a simple matter of telling the computer send this input (nano) to this output (interface/ot), I’m just not an ableton head so don’t know the method…

Did a quick search and found this:
https://www.ableton.com/en/manual/routing-and-i-o/
Which by looking at shows me it’s possible and your almost there, but I’d rather not go figure that part out right now.
You could dig through that and the manual and google, or someone else will come around and explain it.
Your almost there…

Quote from article: You can use any number of MIDI ports for track input and output; the mixer’s In/Out choosers allow them to be addressed individually.

One more thing is once you figure out the ableton routing you’ll also probably need to figure out how to disable the nano’s auto mapping so it doesn’t control ableton anymore…
:totes:

Can someone explain to our friend here, how to route midi in Ableton from a nanokontrol plugged into computer to an OT hooked up to an audio interfaces midi ports also plugged into computer, and how to disable the nanos auto mapping to Ableton?
Not an Abe’s user meself…
