Maybe one day I’ll let you all in on a little secret that will explain why you get corrupt projects… and many other things as well.
Anyone who thinks that the OT is “finished” and not in Beta stage like their other products… it’s now three years old, everyone should let that sink in, no?
The good news is it is 80% complete… the bad news? The final 20% is fighting Elektrons logic… it’s good enough for me to utilise, but the last bit is very hard work, and I have a couple of other projects on the go on top of working full time and other stuff, and given the current state of the OS, well…
I want to love the OT and have had one for 2 years but have only been able to use it for 3 months. I brought it to use live but it crashes constantly and boots up blank and then sometimes just turns back one again. I’ve sent it twice to get fixed and each time the technicians have had it run for 24 hours straight with no error and then they send it back saying nothings wrong with it and as soon as I start using it the graphics garble and then when I restart it it boots blank again? I hope they actually use it a bit instead of just leaving it on because it doesn’t crash until you start using it. I’ve brought different multi boxes and tried it in different houses and even brought another OT powerpack but same thing happens. And I don’t even travel with it, It stays in my studio except for when it gets sent to the technicians. I cant even sell it because it just doesn’t work. I really want to love it but it has caused me such expensive and time consuming pain.
Some people just have bad luck…
Sucks for y’all…
Octatrack is an amazing tool.
Use it live all the time, no issue, ever.
At mere venting, privileged as the OP, this is eloquently put.
Hi there Aiki,
Could you share you experience specifically?
As an OT user I’m concerned as to what the problems were; for my own benefit/protection since I’m become more dependent on it…
Would be a big help to know potential dangers (I know a lot have already been discussed).
Thanks.

To be fair some of the issues I encountered could have been fixed since I was using the OT.
I had one experience where an entire project just got corrupted the day before a gig and I had to go back to a 3 week old backup.
My main problems with octa as a live device is how the switching between sample sets is not per pattern and also that the perf options are not in the same league as either of newer elektron devices. OT never felt like an “instrument” to me and for how I write and play that is a BIG issue.
IT always felt like a computer in a box with a really awkward interface. A4 & RYTM both felt like instruments form day 1 hence the fact they still sit in my studio as opposed to being sold after 8 months of stops, starts, curtailed creativity, data loss and general annoyance.
These days if someone is asking me about performance oriented samplers Ill probably point them at either maschine (if they don’t mind a computer) alternately an MPC or RYTM if they need to play computer free.
Take my opinions on playing “live” with a grain of salt. I only play live with my shoegaze experimental band these days and when I do none of it is sequenced. It’s all live drumming so in reality any sampler without pressure sensitivity and pads to play doesn’t get a look in from me.
In fact the size of the pads (and their positioning) on the RYTM is its main failing in my opinion. If I could get a RYTM with MPC size pads built in instead of having to use and MPD Id be all over that

Thanks for the explanation, Aiki,
I’ve never encountered those specific problems. Maybe an issue with the type of CF cards? The OP was using a stock card (which should be expected work), whereas I am using a totally different card.
Sorry it didn’t work out for you. Good that you have found better options for yourself
I now use the OT to sequence everything (wide range of hardware), record everything (through a board and some other gear), and then perform from the recorded material.
I’ve not had any problems other than my own user errors. Been two years so I will stick. But that’s just my own experience FWIW.
Good thing is you can sell them easily if they don’t work for you. I’ve had some gear over the years that others consider to be wonderful that I used only to improve my EBAY seller rating
Maybe something coming octatrack MKII … Electron post that on Facebook :
or maybe it’s just new unit back in stock
Anyone care to sell me their buggy piece of crap OT?
I’m thinking it’s worth about $300 with all the problems you guys are describing, but I would be willing to go as high as $500.

/\ Yeah + 1.
I never had a corrupt project but surely we all want to know what to avoid.
Then again I backup everything 3 times in 3 places regularly and use a cf-card reader rather than the OT usb. Yet to have issue with taking out/inserting cards in 3.5 years. Never had a crash. (though I didn’t trust the provided CF card right from the get-go due to reports of dodgy cards) Used so much my x-fader is worn down. Sleep well at night. Maybe luck on my side in this case.
But what sampling device is perfect? This is a jack of trades & it works well enough for me as a remixer & re-working pre-stemmed tracks. Other tasks maybe not so well.
IMHO I think some of the design choices/limitations of the OT were pretty unfortunate all things considered…
- Limited numbers of parts locked to banks instead of standard “kits”
- Only 128 static slots, & More RAM for Flex
- Unreliable program change in midi sequencer that can’t be p-locked.
- No delay+reverb on same track
- Mute cutting audio & fx tails
- No flexible track/fx routing a la Monomachine.
… Along with looper issues, half baked arranger (live performance recording with overdub & x-fader position column pls), midi scenes, file management & no live audio recording to CF card.
I wouldnt mind a version 2 if they fixed most of the above.
Prefer they fixed the current one though. After 4 years we gotta wonder though…

heheh - my thoughts exactly!
Swapped mine for an Analog Four. Couldn’t be happier.
Now I’m whining about your whining about whining. SRSLY
There are issues, fact, there are dreamers, fact, there are users who’ll never push the envelope to find those issues, fact, there are those who’ll work around the issues, fact
we’re all allowed a voice, fact, anti-whining is as obnoxious as indulgent whining, fact

Baddcr, please don’t type back so loudly?
Everyone should be able to voice their critical opinion, ideally without using expletives. We all have our good and bad days, me included.

Agreed!
I’m an OT-fan myself. (with occasional hissy fits and righteous indignation similar to the thread starter - true love ain’t easy, hehe)
But there’s a fair amount of things that could be improved, and then everyone (!) would be buying Octatracks, instead of MacBook Pros or NI Maschines… (yes i actually believe what i wrote, not sure if i want that though - it’s cool to be the mysterious outsider).
And to be honest, the bugfixes in this update… I don’t think i ever encountered the bugs themselves…?
Certainly expected more, but it’s good to see elektron has not completely forgotten about their best machine. (A4? that’s a car, right?)
What a clown, there’s no reasoning with some people.
Black or white, my way or no way !
My OT opinion is that it does not need to grow or change, it needs a little bit of UI finesse to bring it in line with the Analog UI experience. The pickup machines are riddled with issues, if nobody mentions this, it won’t change.
I’m not standing up for the OP or the naive dreamers, but let’s just accept that the OT is in need of a polish, doesn’t stop any of us liking it or using it, though PU usage can be a chore
These recent bug fixes are most likely democracy in action, live with it
