JHi. Today i have a setup of OT+A4+AR with midi out from ot to a4 to ar.
Audio going in to ot from both ar and a4 on ab and cd inputs.
I want
to connect my ipad to my octa
to have the ipad midi and transport be controlled by the octa
to be able to sample from the ipad to octa flex machines
To be able to sometimes use the ipad with a thrumachine
Not use a computer or daw in between.
What ould be the best way to connect it all and What connection device do i need? I have the apple camera connection kit already. I want the audio from ipad to ot and midi slaved from ot to all the other machines.
If there are multiple solutions, which is the best?
The big things to keep in mind are using class compliant (ie, no drivers) devices, and power consumption because you cannot charge the iPad when using the CCK, and a lot of devices will draw power from the host device.
With that in mind, I’ve had no issues using an old USB mixer and a USB to midi cable connected to a powered USB hub. My current setup is a bit more elegant but the same in principle, using only a Novation X-Station, also connected to the powered hub to reduce power draw. I can sequence whatever from the OT, and can route audio in and out of the iPad thanks to the X-Station’s audio interface, and on top of all that it functions nicely as a knobby controller.
Ok, so then would it work having a midi to usb cable attached to the a4 midi thru, which is the last in the midi chain of the trinity, to the ipad, via the apple camera connection kit and th outputs to input cd on the octa?

Maybe. That’s a big maybe, too. I don’t have the A4 or AR to test it myself. You should be able to send midi sequences to the iPad using the through of the Analog boxes. It would depend on what else you have in the chain, and what you are using to route the audio back into the OT. What else are you working with to try this out?
Yes, that should work perfectly fine. I you want a “cable style” MIDI interface then please get a good one like the ESI MIDIMATE IO. It’s still only €15-€20 so there’s no reason to get a crappier one.
A powered USB hub will allow you to keep your iPad charged, but I found that these simple USB devices don’t draw much power, so it’s not a huge issue.
YMMV, but IMHO there’s no reason to spend money on a USB audio interface for the iPad if you’re only planning to get audio out of it. Just get a stereo minijack to two mono jacks Y cable and use the headphone output on the iPad to connect it to an input pair on the OT or the inputs on the A4.
RFor me the most important thing is to get audio out of ipad and midi into it so transport and bpm is controlled by octatrack. I want the timing and rythm right so i can sample on the fly in a live situation.
Irrespective of the chosen DA, remember that that OT halves the level of the incoming audio ! So the ‘fidelity’ gets a bit squished on arrival, no way round that unfortunately, except gain (and noise)
Very good point - thanks for the reminder!!
Al the more reason to have really strong clear signals for live sampling :)[/quote]
Fair point, better squished will likely be better than normal squished !!
I did a wee resampling test on folk’s ears, it had surprising results if I recall correctly, thread here
Yeah, it was pretty decent by comparison. For it’s intended usage and live work it’s obviously fine, the stretching algorithm is a more valid aspect to critique. I guess these free upload sites just clear files out that are not accessed!
