Hi, new OT user here. I’m not 100% on what my ‘final’ workflow will be, but as I don’t have much hardware I’d like to get the OT in a complete latency-free, synched loop with my DAW (Bitwig). This includes monitoring the OT’s outs through Bitwig - I could monitor directly but this would mean more faffing about during the creative process, which I want to avoid. I’d like to the OT playing whilst I muck about on it, and also have drum machine VSTi’s etc running in Bitwig. I want to be able to record to the OT from Bitwig, record to Bitwig from the OT and sequence VSTi’s with the OT.
I currently have the OT synched to Bitwig via my Multiface midi out, and a ‘Hardware FX’ device set up in Bitwig that acts as an FX loop through the OT’s A/B inputs and back out the main outs. I plan to set up the cue outs also, for tracking individual OT tracks into the DAW whilst everything else is playing. The Bitwig transport controls the OT fine, but not the other way around (I have set ‘Send Transport’). I foresee issues with playback position but can work around this.
Do I have reasonable expectations of being able to achieve this? I’ve done a few tests and I get the feeling that everything is not quite locked in. For example, triggering a hi-hat sound in the DAW and sending the audio out to the OT, through a thru machine and then recording it back into the DAW resulted in a a very slight (but consistent) offset. In addition, the OT calculates the BPM of recorded audio incorrectly every time. For example, a 4-bar recording at 128bpm was attributed with 129.2 by the OT.
I believe Bitwig has hardware latency compensation, otherwise I can’t see any point of the ‘Hardware Instrument’ and ‘Hardware FX’ devices unless they are just for convenience. It also has a global ‘Hardware Recording Latency’ setting, but I have no idea what to set this to - round trip, half my round trip? I don’t even know how to measure my round trip. Then there’s the old DAW midi clock, jitter etc. issues. The OT is my first piece of hardware so this is new territory for me.
So, if anyone else has tried this it would be great to hear about your experiences.
