OT and sequencing Virus TI2 through MIDI

Evening all, Just brought a Virus Ti2 to go with the OT and RYTM, everything i think lol is connected properly and pressing play on the OT sets off the RYTM in sync. My MIDI is the OT out and in to the Ti2’s in and out and then finally using the thru of the OT into the in of the RYTM.

What I want to achieve next is get the OT and the MIDI capabilities, triggering the virus notes, P-locking / tweaks and start using control changes, I have gone into MIDI track one on the OT, set the global channel the same as in the Ti2 but when I place a trig and start the pattern I don’t hear that sound/note of the Ti2. However when i unselect the red copy button and press the first trig button I can hear the sound of the patch I have going in the Ti2.

Can anyone suggest why please?

I use a OT/AR/TI combo as well. Personally I suggest using ‘Sequencer’ mode on the Virus TI (as opposed to multi), press both [Multi] and [Single] at the same time.

OT Midi Out -> Virus Midi In
Midi Track 01 -> Channel 01
Midi Track 02 -> Channel 02 etc.
Virus outputs into Octatrack A/B or C/D to taste (I use A/B for AR, C/D for TI)

Note: Make sure you are actually setting the Midi Channels correctly via the Note Setup Parameters. When you change the Channel, the CHAN label will be inverted. Hold [Function] and click [Knob A] to confirm the change.

Midi Track 01, step edit, add in some trigs, this should then play the patch on part 1 of the Virus.

You need to either hit [Mixer] and tweak the input A/B or C/D to hear the input, or use Thru machine. I use:

Track 01 -> Thru -> A/B (thus AR)
Track 02 -> Thru -> C/D (thus TI)

Add a trig on both Track 01 and Track 02 on step 01 to trigger the Thru machines and hear the input.

Cheers Rusty, just what I needed to here! :slight_smile:

That’s up and running smooth, second MIDI part didn’t go to plan though, you ever come across not being able to remove a trig? First MIDI part I can go back into and change the trigs about, the second part just seems stuck… strange…

Part or Pattern?

Just part mate, just stuck a trig down for the second MIDI part, seems like the trig is just locked there, pressing the trig don’t seem to stop it either. First MIDI part is fine though. I’m getting issues with the Ti2 now, seems to be locking up, can’t select no different presets or menus for some reason. It’s like there is a sound from the Ti2 that is constantly playing that can’t be stopped!

Disconnect your midi cable from Virus Out to Octatrack in and try again, you might have a midi loop going on…

Seems it keeps doing this MIDI loop thing mate, is there a way around it?

My MIDI is the OT out and in to the Ti2’s in and out and then finally using the thru of the OT into the in of the RYTM.

KISS, just have:

OT Out -> Virus In
Virus Thru -> AR In

Lets get that working first, make sure it’s doing what you want, then worry about midi feedback loops, more advanced connections etc, sounds good?

Sounds good to me, yeah that works so far… cheers Rusty :slight_smile:

Is that how yours is set up mate?

Mines a little bit up in the air at the moment, as trying to add in a new midi sequencer to the mix… but basically:

OT A01: Thru -> A/B (AR)
OT A02: Thru -> C/D (TI)
OT A03 <> A07 : four/five tracks of samples. (Maybe A07 is for the transition trick, don’t know, am currently hunting a Boss RC-505 or RC-505 for live looping)
OT A08: Master track

Midi Sequencer drives six tracks, to six parts of the Virus… I was trying to have OT M01 -> Virus 01 etc, but I don’t like the Octatracks Midi Sequencer…

Add in to that mix, 2x Ruin & Wesen MiniCommands, a gugabox SMD, maybe a couple of fader foxes, and maybe a Livid Block… I’m fine tuning a good way to work right now, that a large part boils down to the midi sequencer, and if it suits/works for me…

Sounds complicated mate!

I wouldn’t mind the idea of trying to get this all back in sync with logic and plugin’s like stylus rmx, you think it can be done (in sync) or is even worth it?

Thanks for the help, working like a charm now :smiling_imp:

Oh, it is… but one needs to work around the limitations of hardware to get stuff working the way one wants, shrugs c’est la vie…

Yes, should be doable, and worth it if that is workflow.

You’re welcome :slight_smile:

I have the same setup/connection and when I’m moving knobs on mixer section on Virus it affecting LFO, Fltdpth and others on Octatrack’s selected track. How to turn it off?

Project → Midi → Control → Audio CC Out is set to INT+EXT

So you are sending midi data on the channels when turning the knobs.

Change it to INT to not send external midi data.

Thank you for answer:-) and one more question
Can I record on Octatrack’s midi channel in LIVE RECORD while playing keys on Virus?

Thank you for answer:-)[/quote]

@Elektron should be paying me a salary… :confused:

Yes, should be able to do that, but you’d have to be careful to avoid midi loops…
