OT and DAW integration

When I was looking into the OT, I thought “2 Gigabyte memory card- maybe I can use it like a hard disc recorder”.
But you can’t, and I thought it important to point that out. 6 minutes, 8 minutes, whatever, you still can’t use it like that…

That’s a lot better, thanks!
Actually it’s over 8 minutes, 85,5MB in 16-bit stereo. Dynamic recorders on and reserves off.
That makes sense, I always record at 24-bit which bumps me down to about 6 minutes. I rarely record more than 3 or 4 minutes though. Pretty neat overlooked feature of the OT, IMO.

For anyone wondering about sync, I’ve had better results with Ableton as master and the OT as slave. It’s tight enough this way, but not the other way.

Is it possible to modulate sample start and end positions – i.e. to get some interesting granular simulation type effects?

Yes. You can modulate the start (STRT) and length (LEN) for the Flex or Static machines.
I strongly recommend that you read the OT manual to find out more about its capabilities.

Thanks – I’m working my way through the manual bit by bit.

There’s another scenario that the manual doesn’t seem to address (unless I’ve missed something) – the possibility of backing up the OT without a computer.

I saw something described along these lines for the OP-1 and I’ll post the video clip link below for quick reference.

Do you think that the same pocess would work with an ot?

Seems like it would work for any USB mass storage device (including Octatrack).

Is anyone using the OT to midi control soft synths on the computer?

Are you having any particular problems?

That’s definitely encouraging regarding the wi-fi backup possibilities! I’ve decided to buy an OT. Even if the wi-fi backup workflow doesn’t work, it will still ne worth it. Amd if the wi-fi nackup thing works, then it will ne huge for me necause it will mean that I will be able to transfer bounced audio files between an OT and iOS music production apps – witjout computer intervention!

Have any of you tried something like this as a simple way to semd MIDI to amd from an OT and a computer?

Thanks! I’ll check those out.
I haven’t been able to try it yet. Just wondering if it is an easy, common, works well sort of thing…or not.

I do Solo, Songwriter stuff with some digital manipulations and ambiences and I am wondering how and if the OT would work as a DAW/recorder so that I can get away from the screen and have a dedicated self contained box to work with. I don’t own an OT but I am considering getting one.
I’d want to record let’s say a mono guitar and mono vocal track plus maybe one or two overdubs and then do some OT magic with the rest of the tracks. Then export the 8 bounced tracks to my DAW and just finalize the mix there. would that work?
Then maybe perform live muting the guit/voc tracks and doing some live manipulations on the rest. So the OT would be my DAW, recorder and live instrument at the same time. that would be awesome.
Would that work out considering storage space and also considering recording on a click and maybe punching in something here and there, if I really just need tape style recording without much editing? People mentioned a 6 minute time limit. is that if i use only one track or all 8 in stereo?
Also can I write certain performance parameter movements into a sequence, like DAW automation?

You can kind of do all this but it’s not exactly what the machine was designed for (looping and sequencing shorter sections of audio). Some sticking points off the top of my head:

 • no punch in/out or overdubs
 • only 2 fx per track, that includes eq, reverb, delay, comp, etc.
 • only 4 physical outputs, so it’s quite hard to export and do your mix outside of the octatrack
 • 6 minutes at a time is your hard limit for recording (65mb flex memory). You can sequence longer tracks from static machines, but they have to be preloaded into your CF card.

I’ve been in your shoes, bought an OT for this kind of thing, learned it, fallen in love, but realised that using it for full mixes included live guitars, vocals etc is too much hassle and too limiting. So now I’m doing the long live takes in ableton, and the OT contributes beats, textures etc, but it gets mixed down in the computer. Not saying it can’t be done, just trying to make you aware of the limitations!
