OT 101 sampling

Hi guys!

My 8track arrived this weekend and I’ve been reading the manual and watching some videos.

But I’m confused regarding how can I add/record samples using other equipments… I’m planning to use it more in a live set up.

I don’t want to buy a new equipment (like a CDJ or a turntable), since I also bought an AR in January.

So, my question is. Can I use a ipad, ipod touch as a “library” to record my samples via OT?

If yes, should I use the USB connection or a irig device to plug my ipod to the OT?

If this option is not available, does anyone have an idea in another cheap way of suppling samples to the OT? I don’t mind in using the memory card, but it would be fun to connect a ipod to it.

I saw a video of a guy using a small radio to sample and I like that stuff.

I appreciate any help

All you need is an audio cable. Have fun!

USB connection is mainly for sample transfer duties, so unfortunately there are no realtime communication back and forth regarding samples as in ie having an ‘library’ on your ipad.

As soon as the USB Disk Mode is active, the Octatrack will be seen as an big card reader to your computer.

I think the fastest way to get an ‘librarian mode’ would be to sample directly via the inputs on your OT. But you´d need to set up some things properly first. If just having an specific ‘librarian’ project for these tasks only and never use this project for any creative process (music/tweaking), you could set up all kind of settings (recording, slicing, midi messages from the sequencer etc) that are tailored for making these tasks a breeze with the other gears you are planning to sample.

There are some third party tools that fine men(/women?) of this forum have coded and made aviable for the rest of us. I´m not sure if any of those tools actually have an librarian function per se, but I wouldn´t be surprised if that is included or perhaps will be. The idea as such is good. Take a look around and see.

Ah!

(I did take a look around while finishing my coffee, and as I suspected Rusty is your hero here)

Nice, nice! Thanks for the ideas.

So, it is unanimous that, I should use my ipod/ipad plugged in the input of OT.

However, is there a need of a audio interface for the ipod? I mean, like the iRig?

Or can I just plug with a audio cable compatible ?

Also, is there any app that someone is using with the OT? Like Strom for AR.

Miketheman, yeah! I read about it, but they didn’t launch it yet… I want to test that!

Yes, just use an audio cable from the headphone out of your iPod to the AB or CD inputs of the OT.
