Will there ever be a possibility to open-source the OT project file format? Not the code that runs the sequencer or the DSP effects, just the information stored in the files. It could be nice to load a project file in a computer editor and see the pattern data, or especially for building arrangements, which can be a bit tricky on the small screen.
If not, would it be OK for someone to reverse-engineer the format and build such an editor?
This is something I would love as well.
I know the purpose of the elektron stuff isn’t for computer editing but I do end up using my computer a lot. I’d love for this… or some sort of midi editor for xox style programming.
compare that with the song-mode of allot of grooveboxes… and the arranger is pure heaven…[/quote]
Yeap ur right but we can’t stop expecting more from electron. I don’t own A4 but I think the arranger mode there is far more better than OT.
That’s ok buddy… I got the same thing… nothing wrong with wanting your shiny toys being shinier I got a wishlist of features of 1 machine to be ported to another… that’s natural… haven’t played with an A4 yet…
I do know that compared with all the roland stuff I played with… elektron is just king!
I don’t hate the arranger at all - it’s just a bit challenging to work with at times. And I’m not talking about dynamic control from a computer, a la Lemur - what I love about the OT is that I don’t need to be tethered to the computer in any way.
I’m just thinking of a utility that would make it easy to browse (and perhaps edit) OT projects offline, taking advantage of the large screen. That’s why the title refers specifically to the file format. It seems like it would be very handy when backing up your CF cards or preparing things for a live show to be able to open up the project file and see exactly which audio files it references, tidy up messy projects, copy patterns or clips between projects and so on.
If the format was released I would totally write an editor, but I don’t think I have the patience to reverse engineer the format. I thought about a methodology for doing it safely and… yeah, it seems like a lot of work.

I’m pretty much in exactly the same boat.
I looked at writing an editor for the patterns and arrangments; but too much hassle reverse engineering it; was wanting to make an app to do patterns, arrangments and samples; but just doing the sample editor now.
Really should contact Elektron when I have some spare time to ask them…
