Open Challenge #19 - Pruning Ideas

hello all! apologies for the delay, a three way tie on the last one had many cooks in the kitchen. @ViolentMeals passed the reigns off to me and @Affectionate-Bee-781, so I will take care of the hosting duties and @Affectionate-Bee-781 provided us with this wonderful prompt.

A challenge inspired by the themes of Yule, removing the clutter and letting something go (so that something new may come to grow in its place).

  1. Create a track, any track. Give it everything it needs, don’t hold back. (Consider incorporating elements of the season, such as your own personal resolutions, peaceful themes, and general yuletide spirit)

  2. Cut something away from your track. This could be an instrument, a section of the song, or a whole frequency band of sound.

  3. Optional collaboration:* find a willing partner, share your track, and let them make the cut for you. Give up control and see what magic awaits

  4. In this new space created, put something new and (potentially) unexpected.

We will set a deadline when we get some submissions rolling in, we hope you will join us!

Since the Autechre show I’ve been to this year, I look forward to making a song for which static frequency bands are taken separately and altered with very distinct treatments.

Could fit this inspiring brief

As for Yule, I’m not fond of this moment of the year so I’ll see what I can do to fit the theme. Most likely cold snow I guess.

oooh, awesome!! would love to hear what comes out of that from ya

fk it up

theres been a lot going on with the holiday season, i know i havent had the mental space to work on something for this yet. hoping to have some time tomorrow, anyone else working on something?

here we go! i killed two birds with one stone.

i made this tune for today’s Jamuary jam

copied from the jamuary thread
i went a little outside the bounds and really changed it up. i removed all of the drums from the first jam, pitched it down an octave, ran it through kodoma and zan-zou on the 404, pitched that down five semitones and ran that through ha-dou and zan-zou and the cassette sim and 303 sim, then chopped that into four haphazard pingpong loops, pitched those around, and played them together. i think its sounds pretty neat, i think when the trumpets i use get ran through this ringer they end up sounding like a men’s choir. maybe its the violin

Fun prompt! I took a completed track I wasn’t happy with, intentionally used the lowest quality stem extraction setting in Spectralayers, and then removed the drums. This left an interesting imprint of the missing drums on the other instruments. I then cheated a bit and added a kick drum because techno.

super cool! thanks for the submission! i think what im hearing is caused by the imprint you speak of, the textures throughout are so unique, almost sounds like a color bass type track but techno. awesome stuff!

anybody else interested in joining in? we have 11 more days to get involved!

get wacky with it! get abstract! take the prompt and mush it up in your hands and find your own meaning deep inside the putty. lets hear your take!

Now that I’m done with the Hip Hop challenge I plan on contributing something.

awesome! thats great to hear, cant wait to see what you whip up!

this is really awesome, love what you did!

I’ve been pretty caught up in Jamuary (and other life stuff) but here’s a track that I think could fit. I started with a drum sequence on the AK then added a bunch of other instruments to it. I ended up squashing and eq-ing most of the original drums away – they appear as the noisy march near the end

I may try to attempt this prompt in another way this week but if not I’ll count this as my submission:)

here’s the original drum beat that started the song before being pruned away

we’ve got a few submissions, i can leave it open until tomorrow evening and then i will put up a little vote (however if @Smapti is the only other entry beyond me and @Affectionate-Bee-781 i would like to offer them the lead with the next battle)

Yes, that’s good with me! The challenge was so good, all the other participants were pruned away (I’ll see myself out now :upside_down_face: )

thanks for playing @Smapti I love where you took it! Looking forward to seeing what you come up with (assuming you’re willing to host the next one?)
