this is so badass. my breathing picked up pace and got tighter while i listened
Me too! im a-scurrrrred
Iām going to have a bang at this once Iāve done the hip hop challenge.
1 hour, Iām in.
You watch as the flame goes out and the darkness begins to thicken. The flame is out, you know it is, you just watched it go out. Your hands drop to your lap and then they drop again. Your elbows, you canāt feel them. The darkness is closer, your hands, where are they? You try to reach for the flame, it is out, you saw it go out. How is it still there? Then you realise you cannot feel your feet, your legs , knees, quickly it climbs up your body. Too quickly! Itās too fast! You cannot get away it is on you before you can blink, before you can turn your head. Your head! You cannot turn your head.
You remember an old teaching, ādonāt go toward the yellow lightā, but the flame is all around you, in every direction faces in the fire laugh and mock you for your stupidity. You sink back and you fall, tumbling back as your body finally betrays you, it is gone now and the fire and the faces are all that is left, rushing toward what is left of what you think you are with horrifying speed.
This isnāt fear, this is Terror! You have never felt it before and now it rushes to consume you. Your arrogant human mind tries one last attempt at self preservation and somehow you are standing, reaching for the door, but you cannot find the handle, pounding fire and flame and faces screaming their insults and mocking laughter. There is no handle to open the door. You cannot get away, and still backwards you fall, and fall.
8 submissions so far! Canāt wait to listen to them, but Iāve gotta finish my own submission firstā¦
He crawled towards the top of the hill very slowly and carefully, lest he be seen, and at the last few meters before the crest he pressed his belly down into the ground and dragged himself forward on his elbows until he was behind the large rock and had a good view of the valley below.
His hands found the glass in his satchel and he put it to his eye and looked down at the landscape before him.
A haze hung in the air from the fires below and tendrils of smoke curled up from the tops of the trees, a stench clinging to them.
He spat.
He was almost there.
All he had to do was cross that valley and heād be out of this place and on to the main road to the Violet City.
His hands trembled and the glass shook slightly, jarring his vision.
Ashes sifted down from a yellow grey sky streaked with black smoke and vapor trails. Rust blew around in the wind. Bent and tortured trees grew gnarled spikes for branches and a thorned, creeping ivy choked the spaces between.
Bone cairns. Piles of skulls. Totems of flesh and wood.
Ample evidence of cannibals at a glance.
He pondered his course of action. There was absolutely no turning back, it had to be through. He would have to go down there. He would have to.

Itās early evening. Youāre out for a walk in a forest. Itās quiet and the air feels dense. Makes it hard to breathe. You look up to the sky. Clouds approaching. Will turn dark soon. No artificial light around. No animals to be heard. You increase pace. Itās completely dark now. You only feel where the path is. Just because you know where it was when you walked here before. Canāt see anything but dark shades. Thereās something close to you. You hear a faint crack. Whatās that dark shape over there? Is it just a few bushes, a tree? You almost dare not to breath, slow down. You donāt want them to see you. You need to get outā¦
The nebulous Old Oneās wing-like appendages allow it to drift through the vast void on currents of aether, and it sings with the celestial bodies as it comes ever closer.

Youāre awake. Good, that means youāre alive. You can feel your heartbeat, so youāre definitely alive. Or perhaps youāre hearing itā¦no matter. The first thing you notice about your surroundings is the light. Itās bright - incredibly bright. Your eyes are closed and still, itās almost unbearable. With so much light, youād expect heat, but thereās none. Itās actually quite cold, yet thereās no sensation of air moving across your skin. You recognize a familiar odor. It reminds you of the acrid stench of an electrical fire. Itās pungent, though not as punishing as the light. The sting of smoke in your sinuses is absent; perhaps the source of the odor isnāt a fire, or a fire was recently extiguished. Your ears begin to capture sounds. Are they voices? They seem to originate from within youā¦at first. You begin to question their source. The āvoicesā begin to surround you. As these strange utterances transit across your field of view, the light permeating your shuttered eyelids dims briefly. Youāre not alone. Things begin to seem familiar. Youāve been here before. You wonder if youāve been here all along. You find yourself drifting, fading, asking yourself, āHow much longer until I again see the lightā¦ā
